OSHKOSH, Wisconsin.- The Dominican Republic announced the "Flying Ambassadors" program to attract private airplane tourism, offering 24-7 personal assistance for the planning of flights, customs procedures, fuel availability, documentation and other formalities.
The announcement by Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) director Jose Tomas Perez is the result of a presidential decree, and comes during the yearly aviation fair.
The decree eliminates all fees by the different agencies on private planes which weigh 30,000 pounds or less.
"The Dominican Republic has everything, with 14 friendly airports, free of charge and of problems, spectacular and pristine beaches, casinos, nightlife, 75,000 hotel rooms , 10,000 foot high peaks, the Caribbean’s highest airport, the Western Hemisphere’s oldest European city and 26 world class golf courses, the authorities said in a statement.
Pilots respond
The Dominican delegation were pleasantly surprised when the Airplanes Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), which had recommended not to visit the country citing difficulties in its airports, and announced the Dominican authorities new disposition and the appointment of Jim Parker, of the company Caribbean Flying Adventures, its "good will ambassador " to help in the effort.

You people are something. This is simply a “ tourist trap” for aviation. If you don’t know the meaning in English of a liar I will give it to you in your 500 years old language, MENTIROSOS. It used to be that airport fees where considered almost an "armed robbery" where the government took half and the airport administration the other half of $$$. Now since you have this “sharks” administrating these public airports they take 100% of the cake. Who is going to pay the $300 bill for a small Cessna when you land at Las Americas airport for Servair? Same thing for La Romana and Punta Cana. Once you landed there is nothing you can do about it. Come on people, get real. I think you “word” (su palabra) is worth five “cheles” (meaning Dominican pennies). "The Dominican Republic has everything, with 14 friendly airports? Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government and international airport operators develop a program to promote private aviation in various international fairs to increase that high end tourism toward the country.
To organize the fairs the business leaders Frank Rainieri, president of the Group Puntacana, and Felix Garcia, of Cibao International Airport, net with Airports Department director Arístides Fernandez Zucco, who said the effort seeks to increase flights towards Dominican Republic by 10%, for which he affirms the country counts on the best airport infrastructure to develop that type of tourism.
He said the Tourism Ministry and the Civil Aviation Institute also contribute and coordinate with the private sector in the project.

Somehow the essence of the subject is lost as we add comments. It all started with ... “Dominican Republic boosts effort to attract private airplane tourism”. Decree 169-08, of March 24, 2008 (1 year, 4 months and 3 days ago) indicates the removal of government fees. Now, you have these people saying not only in OSHKOSH but also in Sun and Fun Air shows that it is virtually free of fees to fly to Dominican Republic. Who cares to who the money goes to? We are paying too much to land at these airports compare to other islands. I know for shure that this are the most expensive airports to fly in the Caribbean. This is not an overnight thing. Is just what we see day by day here in D.R.

But your postings have this never ending DR is corrupt and this is bad, bad and more bad. Let's see some positive thoughts every now and then.
Cpilot in Puerto Rico,
DR has many problems, Dominicans in general acknowledge these problems and are in constant discussion about the extensive nature of these issues that plague the republic. Puerto Rico also has many problems stemming from drugs and corruption. The social decay that has happened during the last 10 years in PR is substantial, to say the least. But if I or any other Dominican went on a PR web-site to trash PR on a daily basis for her problems, what do you think the majority Puerto Rican base audience would have to say? "Go fix your XXXXXXX own nations problems," would probably win the day.

Jim,
Now a conversation can begin. Yes, there are many people upset by Leonel's actions while in government. But remember, Leonel has to work within the constraints and limits of the time. He has, in my opinion, managed his time in office far better than the Hippo Man, Balaguer, Blanco, and Guzman. But that does not mean he is beyond criticism, all governments need to be kept on their feet. And a healthy and strong civic society and free press are quintessential in helping keep government officials and others in society in check.

The DR as you must be aware of by now, has had a tormented and difficult historical upbringing. Its consolidation as a nation occurred under the ruthless and megalomaniac government of Rafael Trujillo, and Balaguer who followed was but an intellectually superior psychopath. Had this last leader taken the US offer of 1966 to integrate the DR into the Export Led Industrialization model that transformed Puerto Rico and other nations into modern societies, DR's current underdevelopment would have been largely solved. But he didn't and we are poorer for his short-sightedness. Leonel's attempt to force DR into modernity has not been smooth, and yes there are many corruption issues. But what he's doing IS bringing DR more exposure, more funding sources from Europe and the US, Japan and other nations. It's painful sometimes, but he's doing a far better job than the previous Presidents.
Written by: Atabey, 28 Jul 2010 5:04 PM

Remember DR was a nation that did not run on modern accounting principles until he came into office! Balaguer use to run the government with his little "black book" in hand. That caudillista style is hopefully a thing of the pass in DR. The numerous corrupt groups and others that have for decades lived and nurtured their corrupting practices is a complex and difficult proposition for any government to attempt to control and neutralize. He needs to be more committed to this fight. The recent arrests might--MIGHT-begin this sort after change in LF government. I surely hope it happens. Again, his trip to Haiti IS an important trip because Haiti represents one of the most important issues of geo-political and the National Interests of the DR State and Nation. Simply put, without Haiti's betterment, DR is in a losing position. The island cannot be physically separated and the common problems between the two nations have to be addressed.

The time has come to deal with Haitian and Dominican concerns, and LF is a better leader than the Hippo man would have been in negotiating the Dominican Republic Haitian Republic Accords of 2010. If, and I think the International funding, will be predicated on some mutual understanding by both nations, LF will be seen by later generations to have been a transformative leader for the betterment of the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic tourism officials have worked the world to attract tourists, and are seeing results. But not from American private pilots. For years they have appeared at press conferences at aviation trade shows and air shows, but find few journalists waiting to hear their message. You’d think they might get discouraged. But not this year at Oshkosh. They simply multiplied their numbers and reinforced their message. They are not going away. It’s 650 nm from Florida to the Dominican Republic, and you can island hop all the way. It can be done in six to eight hours by the average small piston-engine aircraft. It is obvious that our failure to go will only increase their efforts. You might as well go. After all, the Dominican Republic has it all. I just heard that at their press conference. Twenty seven golf courses, beaches that stretch uninterrupted 40 miles..oops, sorry, I’ve become one of them

I see so many good things that are Dominican heritage and then I see blind chavinism like blutarsky shows and know the system cannot be repaired.
I originaly had hopes that Leonel would do something of good even though he was originally elected with Balaguers help I thought there is hope but instead I found that Leonel is trying to save the world rather than his country for which he was orriganly elected and the corruption and the narco trade flurish under his command.
I will stop at this time for I beleive I have said my piece and wish erveyone well.
The problem is that your posts are not balanced; to be totally fair, I can only speak from 8 months worth of being on this site, perhaps I caught you in a different darker phase.

The only reason that I’m answering late is because I was working, flying. If had seeing your unfounded statement. I will take some time to illuminate your “precious” mind.
Can you show me where in my comments I wrote something not related to the subject in discussion? Let me refresh you the subject… Dominican Republic boosts effort to attract private airplane tourism… Obviously I have more experience and knowledge than you to talk about this matter. It is common for cowards show their weakness by avoiding a subject in hand with crap. I made emphasis in the 1 year, 4 months and 3 days old decree. Of coarse they (the government) drop their fees to private aircraft. What you and others don’t know is that most airport operators like Aerodom increase their private fees which at the end we are paying the same if not more. Like other areas in the Dominican Republic we are paying the same outrageous price tag.
