I'm sure the tourism boom will continue with hotels fully booked.

At this time of year, most are bargain shoppers that don't bring more that $100.00 in cash.

Since the payment for the travel package is made abroad, most of the money stays there, what trickles here is to break even, no mas.

I believe that the government can do better, they just need to get their act together. I live in NYC and it's shame that I see so many tourism commercials from other other caribbean countries, yet I have only seen a few from DR. There is something very wrong with that picture.

danny, i have had the same experience. it always mystifies me how people can manage to litter the main autopista. how do they get so much garbage there? nobody lives on the highway! how does that garbage get there? do guys stop their cars and discharge their garbage containers there? do they realise that this is their country, and they should show more concern and respect? i can understand garbage accumulation in a densely populated city, but on a divided highway? you can drive for 100 miles in Canada and never find a cigarette butt on the highway. what the heck is happening with us here?

dread,
Like I said before... In DR most people are looking out for themselves and do not care about the outcome. Many litter anywhere on the road so the interior of their car will remain clean...

I think that they need to teach this in DR schools... Do not trash the island!

On the garbage issue, I saw an ironic scene today. A garbage truck rolling down the road with a full load....good!

The guys in the front decided to throw out thier bottles and lunch containers from the cab. So typical here...pick it up with one hand...throw it back out with the other!

Oh yes what about the grafitti in the US. Bridges etc are covered with it.

N.Y. I am told is coverd in grafitti.

The city's resurgent graffiti problem, on buildings as well as subways, has not escaped the notice of City Hall. In December, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg signed into law a ban on possession of "graffiti instruments," including etching acid, by anyone under 21. Besides etching acid, the ban covers such things as aerosol paint and broad-tipped indelible markers, which are used by graffiti vandals on buildings.

More attention to the problem of rubbish is needed but there is much action in many areas of the country.

Volunteer beach clean up take place and often commerce employs gereral garbage collectors.

Slightly off the beaten track there is little problem.

ABC, ever the idiotic relativist, reminds us that there is grafitti in New York. i guess that means there is no garbage in the DR.

and, by the way, ABC, I am aware that you have some personal vendetta against America, and use every opportunity to deliver yet one more scatterbrained rant against that country. now, it is grafitti. well, there is a lot of grafitti in London , too. maybe you should worry about the plank in your eye before worrying about the speck in the eyes of Americans. calling Americans imperialists is so laughable, since you Brits were the biggest imperialists of all time.

drinfo, as one who appears to be a shill for some agenda, maybe you can pass on your info that tourism is expanding to the people of Puerto Plata, who have forgotten what a tourist looks like
