Santo Domingo.– The Dominican capital will host the Best Sommelier in the World contest, an event organized by the Worldwide Sommeliers Association (WSA) and Italian enologist Thomas Sartori.

The event, held every 2 years, will take place in Santo Domingo from 11 to 18 October with the attendance of experts from Puerto Rico, Spain, Cuba, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, France, England, Italy, Argentina,  Hungary and the European Union.

The last edition took place in Rome and granted Austrian Aldo Sohm the top prize. The competition included blind tasting, editing a wine list, pairing, and service. For the service test, a restaurant environment was simulated on a stage.

Always remember " Never allow the brown paper bag to touch your lips " and consume wine that has been aged in the delivery trucks

As I have yet to meet anyone in the DR who knows anything about wine as I have never seen a sommelier here of even the most basic standard , I am sure that this competition is simply a good excuse to have a holiday .When there are thousands of outstanding sommeliers in France especially , as well as in New York and London and other sophisticated cities , how could this be a serious competition here when the most important thing for Dominicans is the coldness of the Presidente .

talk about irony. holding a competition based on one of earth´s most pretentious pastimes in a country in which 42 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. as juanb says, at last we have something important upon which to cast our collective gaze.
