Santo Domingo.– Dominican Republic registered a number of 4,124,543 non-resident air arrivals for 2010, which represents 32,240 more non-resident arrivals than in 2009, for a 3.31% growth.

According to the Central Bank, it is the first time that the four million-mark has been crossed. In 2009, non-resident air arrivals totaled 3,992,303. Overall, in 2010, the  statistics show 4,586,264 arrivals to airports nationwide, up 171,508 travelers, or 3.88%.

Travel in December was up 0.75%, despite the cancellation of several flights due to snowstorms. The leading source markets for tourists to the Dominican Republic continue to be the United States and Canada, with 54%.

Another strong market is South America. There were 67,436 more arrivals from Argentina (26,052+), Brazil (17,583), Chile (11,234), and Central America and the Caribbean with 14,801 more visitors compared to 2009.

There was a decline of 62,066, due to fewer travelers from Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom due to the effects of greater austerity suffered in Europe.

Basta,

Do you have a link to support your statement of tourism being down 30%? Or was that statistic the population decline in Haiti since 2009? If so, by what I've seen in Santiago, the number is much greater than 30%.

I have been looking at many sites of newspapers around the world and there is very very little mention ..just one press release from Venezuela . mentioned once several days ago in the BBC. can find nothing in papers from Italy or France ..cannot read or speak Russian .
As long as there are no more aftershocks , for example from the staff who worked at the wedding and also ate lobster , I think this will blow over very soon

there must be a monstruous boom in tourism in some parts of the country, to offset the horrific decline in the industry in the Puerto Plata area.

some friends of mine that had worked in the hotels in punta cana have been out of work for some time now.forget puerto plata its history for now. unless the government steps in and does a make-over of the city, think its a lost cause.
maybe the numbers are true but lots of the tourists that do come and the gov't places add's for are low-rent tourist's.
PUERTO PLATA KILLED IT SELF, IN THE PLAYA DORA COMPLEX THE PEOPLE THAT WORKED THEIR USED TO TELL THE GUESTS "DONT LEAVE THE HOTEL GROUNDS THE CITY OF POP IS A PLACE WHERE THEY WILL YOU OR EVEN KILL YOU" VERY INTELLIGENT FOR THEM TO PLACE FEAR INTO THE TOURISTS, VERY INTELLIGENT. THE REASON THEY DID THIS WAS TO HAVE THE TOURISTS STAY ON THE HOTEL GROUNDS AND SPEND THEIR MONEY AT THE HOTELS.THESE PEOPLE ONLY THOUGHT ABOUT THEM SELFS NOT THE FUTURE AND THESE PEOPLE MIGHT RETURN ONE DAY. NOT VERY SMART WHERE THEY.

Veronica ..maybe you should drive from Santiago to Bayahibe and Punta Cana and to Bavaro just to see the huge impressive developments and all the tourists and all the action on the golf courses , and around the places outside also though with Ai hotels there is little need to move far .
I drove up north to play some golf recently and I agree that the very beautiful north and north west is like another country and not like the capital and the east .
In Zona Colonial in the capital where I live there has been a constant stream of tourists and Plaza Espana has been very busy at night . So even though you may not belive anything the government says, you can see things are going ok in the east and the capital as far as tourists are concerned

Stupid RJ fees pay for the superior airports and air traffic control etc.
Really the fees should be increased to pay for nice high speed trains so the tourists don't have to rent cars.

lol, high speed train, in your dreams, ABC.... eF the tourist. Wanna see more than 4million visitors a year, educate the island and we can provide better service and NEW ideas to keep them coming back.

The entire island needs a reassessment.

Corruptman ..you should look at the arrivals by ship which carry thousands of passengers , you should look at all the incoming flights at SDQ and at la Romana and at Punta Cana and at Puerta Plata and at the new airport near Nagua .

Russian Railways project to build modern high-speed rail line in Libya from Sirt to Benghazi

On 17 April 2008, an agreement was signed by Libyan Railways and Russian Railways on the construction of a line linking Sirt and Benghazi, after Russian Railways won a tender held by Libya’s national committee for organizing, managing and implementing railway projects, having offered the best project proposal in terms of price-quality ratio.

Under the project, a modern high-speed (up to 250 km/h) railway line with track gauge of 1435 mm will be built between Sirt and Benghazi, running along the Mediterranean coast and linking the main cities of Libya, and in the future becoming part of the international transport corridor of North Africa. In the first stage of the project, the train speed on the line will be up to 160 km/h.

all in time . travel today is better and safer.compared to 25,or 50, years ago i can fly non stop bos to sdq 3:50 minutes. santo domingo to santiago 3hrs on caribe tour how long was that trip 25 or 50 years ago. ill bet that was an overnight trip at one time. roads railways and runways unfortanatly are built as needed and generaly lag behind the need. i dont think it would be wise to build highspeed transportation and hope there is a need . remember the concord breakfast ny city lunch and shopping in london ny city and home that eavening its nice, duable, but not enough people need it. transportation is not like a ball feild you cant just build it and they will come.

Just a question: Could the earthquake that occurred in Haiti have contributed to the rise in "tourism" numbers for the year 2010. Remember, the earthquake occurred in Jan. of 2010 and for months, Haiti's main airport was either inoperable or extremely congested. Many rich Haitians ran to the dr to catch flights to Miami and other US destinations. Many news reporters, Donors, medical groups, etc were forced to use the dr airports as a connecting point.

I pulled this off of Wikipedia Haiti's Earthquake -"Many countries responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and support personnel. Communication systems, air, land, and sea transport facilities, hospitals, and electrical networks had been damaged by the earthquake, which hampered rescue and aid efforts; confusion over who was in charge, air traffic congestion, and problems with prioritisation of flights further complicated early relief work."

Maybe I'm wrong

As corruptman states....."I don't think so". You need to do the math. 45 full planes every day for 365 days a year?! The numbers have to be inflated. How many seats / passengers of those flights include nationals returning home? That would really affect the numbers - not everyone landing in the D.R. is a tourist. RE: Punta Cana area; Cap Cana is upside down - it is a financial disaster. While the village of Punta Cana is booming, the tourism numbers are questionable - the growh spurt there is by virtue of the Punta Cana owners and new residents. The Punta Cana hotel is not flourishing. Hotels in Bavaro area are all suffering. A wise man once said, "Do not believe your own advertising". Re: building a high-speed train system: You have to be kidding me! Who in their right mind would ride a high-speed train in the D.R. that was driven and maintained by Dominicans? Are you crazy?! That would be suicide. Have you ever tried to drive through Higuey?

Not sure about the investment portfolio involved, but the south eastern landscape does have a reasonable topography suitable for a high speed rail-system. The Chinese have "stolen" many of the component know-hows from the French and Siemens and will shortly be exporting "their" rail-systems to third world nations. and BTW, modern rail-systems use computers to guide them so human input is kept at a minimum these days. With time, it's not crazy to think a high-speed rail system will play an important part of the national transportation system. Of course, before this takes place, a rail-system connecting Santo Dominigo with Santiago would better serve the nation.

I have been going to Punta Cana for 11 years straight, and this past year, it was more packed that I have ever seen, so I def agree with the numbers.

Experienced similar greater numbers in Ciudad Colonial as well.

CorruptMan gave his numbers on 45 incoming flights a day as something impossible in the country. So you are saying that Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, La Romana, Santiago and Puerto Plata, (not including other airports like in Samana) are not able to at least handle 9 incoming flights alone? You have to be kidding me.

Personally, I think this survey you are talking about is just a lot of BS.

I could see DR scoring less than some of those countries there, but behind Jamaica and Mexico? Unless these Britts have been living under a rock and and simply selecting the country they less know I don't know who in their right mind who score DR behind those Mexico and Jamaica in safety.

Perhaps a need to clarify here. The least safe was Mexico followed by the rest of the list with D.R tenth in the ranking. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

actually, lovingit, i will agree that Jamaica is a dangerous outback, and the news releases add to the perception. however, FAR more foreigners have met their demise in the DR in the last two years than in Jamaica. that is a fact
