SANTO DOMINGO.- Of the three million visitors to Dominican Republic last year, 1.2 million were Europeans, a figure higher than Cuba and the Mexican Caribbean, and confirms France as the top emitter.

France contributes 250,000 tourists per year, higher than countries like Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain or Russia, according to Jean Marc Harion, president of the Dominican-French Chamber of Commerce (CCDF), during his participation in the "First European Tourism Summit,” quoted by news source diariolibre.com.

Nonetheless the figures don’t mean much for the country’s hoteliers and tourism sector representatives, because they prefer fewer tourists, as long as they spend more and stay longer, said Julio Llibre, president of the National Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores), speaking as a panelist in the conference held the Hotel Santo Domingo.

The hoteliers also acknowledged a fall in tourist arrivals from Europe, but recognize that they have to look for alternatives in the Russian market and other zones like South America.

I have heard all that before with China ..well we will wait and see if a fraction of this will be built but it sounds quite horrible for the Bahamas to have that thrust upon them
BTW the word emit in the article above can not be used like that .the word is for a discharge of fluids or vapours or smells but definitely not departing tourists.

Yesterday , I spent more than 5 hours going around the various galleries from Ave mella down to el Malecon in Zona Colonial , looking for the two paintings for my home. I decided to engage in conversations with all the various owners and asked how things were going at present .
Without exception they all said they had never had worse times and that so many businesses had closed down but could not be sold . In Zona Colonial this has happened only in the last 9 months but it has been obviosly bad in Santiago for longer ..
Every country has tightened their belt with new taxes and reduced benefits and so n so I cannot see things improving in the short term . The obvious exception is with the RD government which has increased the presidential budget significently ,,it is a disgrace and so sad for all those on the very low income levels to see it

Ric,
I don't know what to make of these articles. This article claims that tourism is down and then in the next few days another article strikes up that claims tourism is at an all time high and seemingly unaffected by the economic market downturn. I guess the best assessments can be made by you and other boots on the ground that are interelated to the population and the environs on a real time, physical basis.

Those in power should be very concerned about the future direction of tourism in the DR. Everyone has seen a continual downturn over the last several years, on the North Coast anyway.

A somewhat mis-leading Headline to this article. It looked as if France sent more visitors than the U.S. or Canada. It's only as you read down you realize they are talking about European visitors and not all visitors.

And as someone has mentioned not so long ago there was an article reproduced on here saying visitor figures were up.

Funny how all last year all the figures were tourism is up and the numbers are up. Now this year they say they were down. I guess it is really starting to hit home now. I have noticed the lack of spending for some time now but people disagree. The people I see spending in our family business are the ones linked to crime and corruption. Those are the people with money to buy things. The rest run large balances in the book. A shame people cannot even afford to eat yet criminals are buying luxury cars and homes to hide their money,

devin11 yes , sometimes you have to do a little interpretation with articles here .I think , in response to veronica , that the euro crisis and the effect of budgetary measures in all European countries has bitten harder this year than last year so that may explain the downturn ,.
You can easily see how the tourist industry is going by going to the various booking sites and seeing what is available and also what discounts are being given ,,,maybe a rough guide only .
Veronica, I am innterested to know how you can recognise a person, who enters your family business, as being linked to crime or corruption , Hardly likely it is a badge on a lapel
