Santo Domingo.– The new 200-kilometer highway (Autopista del Coral), from the capital city to tourist hot spot Punta Cana, will make it easier for visitors to explore the country.

According to Susana Rosa, the DR's Montreal-based director of tourism, the divided highway, which has been under construction for the last four years, was completed earlier this year from Santo Domingo to La Romana on the south coast, significantly reducing travel times between the two cities.

The final portion, from La Romana to Punta Cana, is expected to be finished by May 2012. The project is part of the East Highway Corridor being constructed by the government.

Most Canadian tourists head to the all-inclusive resorts of Punta Cana at the eastern tip of the country, although Puerto Plata on the north coast is particularly popular among francophones, Rosa told The Canadian Press.

Rosa said the number of Canadian visitors has been steadily rising in recent years, and is expected to top 700,000 for 2011. Canada is the country's second-largest source of visitors, after the U.S.

This will be a wonderful highway when it is finished but the simple fact is that it is no where near completed ..as most people know the bypass of San pedro de Macoris is only one way each way and few people dare to use it at night because of the animals and the delinquents on the by pass so they go through San pedro ,,,There is no by pass of La Romana and it is a complete bottle neck for more than 6 miles ..the bypass has not even been started .
Now if we look at the other complete fairy tale from la Senora Susana Rosa , the bridge over the Rio Chavon is probably 2 years from completion based on the currect construction speed and the roads to the new quite spectacular bridge are probably a year away as aare the roads from el Limom to the Byahibe turnoff.
I am sure Punta Cana Mike can give a more accurate picture of the bypass of Higuey and Otrabanda which I think are not much better progressed ,,little chance of completion before the election .

I drove yesterday from PC to LRM.
I will say this loud and clear.....do not drive this passage after dark. It is a major accident waiting to happen. I can see the day when once more, a bus load of Dominicans or tourists tragically loose thier lives.

Who is to blame? I guess the government of the country...seeing that they do not maintain this road...until a politician gets a flat tire from hitting one of the major holes (far beyond a pothole).

Add to that, the onslaught of $40,000+ SUV's driven with their xenon headlights blaring on high, and the swarm of motos driving without any lighting, you have a delightfully dangerous drive.

Seems with the new road...progressing at tortoise-like speed, has made those in power forget that the only road in and out is a liability of there very own making....just waiting for a major incident involving lose of many lives.

I hope at the least, they will open the length between Punta Cana and Benerito asap. Would even take it in it's curre

To say that the Santo Domingo-Romana stretch is finished....is a joke! 4 lanes suddenly merging to two lanes...stretches of the old road being used (unrepaired) as an east lane.
Should be Santo Domingo to San Pedro. Even then, once to Boca Chica you are in a mess of....well those who drive the route...understand!
