BARAHONA.- Ducks in the tens of thousands from North Florida have been arriving at Laguna Rincon lake in Cabral in the last few weeks in their seasonal migration, affirmed the head of the local guides association.

Raffi Alcantara said the large number ducks birds heralds the most important time for the scientific reserve, which normally receives more than 200,000 ducks from all North America between October and December and stay until March. “The ducks have arrived now from Florida, running from the cold and come to this zone looking for a warm area such as ours in the Caribbean.”

He said the migratory birds water hens, flamingos, doves, herons, broad bill tody and others also come during this season and thanked the Environment Ministry, the Barahona Ecological Society and the Spanish Cooperation Agency for helping to conserve them.

Interviewed on Radio Enriquillo, Alcantara added that people don’t frequently visit Laguna Rincon, “because many people don’t know this paradise within our region, our towns of Barahona.”

The hunting of guinea foul and some varieties of dove is allowed in season. Not ducks.

Well, let's try to keep it that way, for Pete's sake!! Should have also talked about the undetermined number of Crocodiles in the lake with a taste for human flesh!

Anthony. Sorry, I did not mean to project that idea. I was wrong to allude environmental disaster due to unconcerned people with a malicious bent.
As we all know, our fauna has been in decline since Columbus for exactly that reason. I'm just worried that certain people will get the idea that it's duck shooting season, that's all.
