Santo Domingo.- One of the country’s leading hoteliers yesterday called on the tourism industry and other productive sectors to financially support the country’s efforts to attract the U.S. major golf championship PGA Tour, an event first proposed by the top developer of the Cap Cana resort, Ricardo Hazoury.

Rafael (Papo) Blanco, vice president of the hotel chain Viva Wyndham Resorts, said the country’s several major golf resorts and tourism activities can reap considerable benefits from establishing a formal stop in the PGA Tour, the world’s most prestigious golf championship.

Speaking exclusively to DT during the farewell cocktail for outgoing AES Dominicna president Marco De la Rosa, Blanco agreed with Hazoury’s push for the country to be one of the PGA’s venues, stated during the inaugural of the Punta Espada links in Cap Cana, headed by its designer and golfing great Jack Nicklaus. “Resorts like Casa de Campo can host a revolving tournament, with Punta Cana (east) another year, then Playa Grande (north) the next.”

The hotelier, who agreed with president Leonel Fernandez’s effort to attract major golf course developments, also noted the push of the sport in the interior, including the mountain city of Jarabacoa, where plans are underway to expand its current 9-hose course to an 18-hole links.

Really this is a lot of nonsense,,,These courses which are usually surrounded by housing estates pay huge sumes of money to attract the main tour or the Chanpions tour for the oldies... Cap cana coulld not afford to pay any more money to the PGA to host another Chamions tour and I do not think the event was a financial sucsess for the owners of the land around the course,
casa de Campo does not need to host a tournament for the PGA as everyone knows about the courses there already and there are dozens of amateur tournaments... Playa Grande , a wonderful course is in such appalling condition and has no proper facilities so no proper event can be held there

Many people love golf but, how many will be watching? How much will it cost to host the PGA and how much in profit will it generate? Here some other ideas to increase tourism and create a positive image of the DR:
Increase funding in education
Provide security in the entire country but, specially in the capital city.
Provide 24 hour of electricity.
Collect all garbage on the streets, beaches, and rivers.
Expand Zona Colonial and create commercials and residential buildings in rocks or other materials but, most match the surrounding areas.

Zona Colonial is the best in Santo Domingo and the Beaches and weather are the best things in Punta Cana. Zona Colonial has a lot of attraction that can easily be utilized to attract (no atracar) visitors.
