Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.- Despite the economic woes among the major international markets, Dominican Republic’s tourism industry 2010 and start of 2011 with encouraging signals including a 3.1% growth last year and a positive tendency that has continued in the first quarter this year, as evidenced by a climb of 3.3% in the arrival of foreigners by air.
“We have a promissory future,” said National Hotels and Tourism Association (ASONAHORES) president Julio Llibre, to welcome the hoteliers, tour operators and journalists in the opening cocktail for the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange DATE-2011 held at the Hard Rock Hotel’s convention center, where the business rounds take place.
Tomorrow Thursday the event moves to the new Bavaro Barceló Palace de Luxe in the Barceló Hotels complex, where the Caribbean feast for the delegates goes into the night.
Llibre said the tourism sector has entered a new phase “of consolidation of the product that has matured with an updated and diversified offer in keeping with the requirements of the most sophisticated markets.” He said the Dominican tourism which depends mostly on the modality of all included, of sun and beach, “has been perfected and progressively diversified.”
“We’ve fomented parallel boutique hotels and tourist condos in the country, oriented to the latter, to new segments that increasingly demand prolonged stays and customized services,” the business leader said.
Calling it “more good news,” Llibre said that thanks to tourism and other attractions, Dominican Republic is still the Caribbean’s most attractive destination for investors, with 37% (US$2.2 billion) of the region’s US$5.8 billion investment in the 2009-2010 period.

sadly, these self serving announcements do not tell us what the money is being invested in, or the sources thereof. the recently concluded data on competitiveness puts the DR near bottom of the class, so i really wonder what motivates the owners of money to invest here. maybe we are getting only half the story, maybe less than half.

THE DR IS # 1
IN THE BEST BEACHES, THE BEST DIVE AND SNORKLING IN THE WHOLE AREA,
VERY THING IS THE #1 IN THE DR. anyway this is what the tourists minister is always telling us.
what the dr really needs is to create an overall experience for the guests, that are designed to attract a wide variety of tourists. with hotel rooms, meeting and convention space, spas, restaurants, retail, theatres and a real CASINO, destination resorts are the type of high-level, full experience properties that can flourish in the dr.
THE IDEA OF A DESTINATION RESORT IS TO HAVE A VAST AMOUNT OF ENTERTAIMENT OPTIONS FOR THE PEOPLE TO ENJOY., FORGET THE ZONE IN SANTO DOMINGO AND FUN CITY IN POP.. GET A REAL TOURISTS MINISTER WHO KNOWS WHAT HES DOING AND WHAT THE TOURISTS REALLY WANT.

where did DT drag up this word ,,promissory ,,to be used in this context .It is totally incorrect .It should be promising ,
All the signals for a rise in tourism are indeed promising with more airlines proposing to land in Punta Cana and the increase in the number of beds available . I think there is a very good mix of destinations here now from the top end at Casa de Campo and the golfing resorts in Cap Cana , through to the upmarket AI hotels and finally to the more downmarket hotels in Puerta Plata .With the huge number of secondary industries associated with tourism industry ,it looks good for us . But , as we have said often , we need to get Puerta Plata to offer a cleaner and less sleazy environment

the only way one could really get to see pop was on a sunday morning, maybe at 6-7am.
not many bikes on the streets at this hour.beautiful city when without the cars and bikes.
not much to do over there, if your not looking for the ladies of the night, or the warm weather then your in problems.
if anyone is going to travel to the dr or other palaces this website is great to check-out.

example-spirt airlines which regulary advertises hugh discounts-flights as low $9-but its the carrier that charges for carry-on luggage {between $20- $45} it also dropped the CHECKED BAG WEIGHT LIMIT TO 40LBS. instead of the industry's standard 50lb..
BAGS over the limit will cost between $25-$100 depending on weight.
and $2 bucks for a coke when on board.

as usual, the cretin Rubirosa weighs in with his two pesos, generally nonsense. i made reference to the fact that the DR does not have the number one snorkeling and diving in the region. a list published regarding the rankings of the 10 best dive areas does not include any location in the DR. it does, however, include Grand Cayman. not that facts are allowed to cloud the opinions of the imbecile Rubirosa.
