Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Ministry of Tourism welcomes new direct flights to Casa de Campo La Romana International Airport on the Southeast Coast; twice weekly JetBlue flights from New York's JFK will begin in November 2011 and daily American Eagle flights from Miami to La Romana began April 5.

According to Magaly Toribio, Vice Minister of International Promotion, the new flights put the beautiful and romantic La Romana area within a few hours of two major U.S. cities.

“Dominican Republic's long-term commitment to innovative marketing has firmly established our culturally rich paradise in the hearts and minds of global travelers who seek sensational sun, azure blue seas and sumptuous and affordable world-class hotels,” Toribio said.

“Our country's increasing popularity with U.S. visitors allows our airline partners to increase their flights to meet the growing demand for our warm and welcoming island nation,” she added.

As a growing global destination, the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE), held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Convention Center in Punta Cana from April 27-29, drew hundreds of international tourism buyers, tour operators and media to the country's glamorous East Coast to conduct business and book future travel from around the world.

During the week's events, the DR Ministry of Tourism noted that non-resident visits to the DR increased in the first quarter of 2011 by 3.3 percent following a record 4.1 million visitors to the DR in 2010, setting the pace for an even more successful 2011.

Yea I have a bridge to sell you if you believe any of these numbers. The price of an airline ticket alone is the most expensive I have seen lately. Gas prices and a poor economy does not mean more holiday travelers. We get plenty of drug and corruption money as always the criminals love trying to launder their money on our island but the majority of Dominicans don't even get a raise in pay. If our economy is doing so well and we are getting so many new visitors why is it that the majority of the population lives on the same wages they had 2 or even 3 years ago while prices keep going up? If things are doing so well why are more people than ever out of work?

Like I said anyone who believes this I have a nice bridge to sell you also. The same typical lies to keep the public thinking things are good when they are still the same.

3.3 % increase to 4.1 mil ! WOW that's impressive , how little growth .
Everywhere else arrival record's are broken by 15-19 % .
Reason for this : 20 million yearly Tourist visitors of North Africa had to be relocated to other vacation destinations this year , and the DR manages to only get 3.3 % increase . What a shame .

@ Veronica. I agree with you 100%. As I have said it many times, there is a saying in good old Mexico: "The valiant lives only until the coward allows him / her to live". The valiant in this case is the aggressor, the corrupt, the bully. So, the workers, the laborers (males & females alike) and the children need to organize public protests to combat the social inequalities, these economic inequalities. The playing field must be leveled for the workers, the laborers. Where only the man is the bread winner, the housewife or "domestic worker" also feels the stress, the oppression caused by economic burdens. Your government needs to be concerned & must transcend that concern by providing economic stability, by giving its people the respect they deserve. Imagine single mothers or single fathers trying to make it under these conditions! The children feel the impact as well. They do know when their guts are sticking to their stomach from hunger. Hunger causes incredible pain in the stomach!

@ Veronica. But, I think you can count me in as a visitor this summer, provided all goes well on my end. I have some families and nice lady friends to visit down there. I will likely take my do-rag / skull cap or my cowboy hat, LOL.
With regard to the DR's economic crisis, you can start by educating people about the issues. What people? Government officials, primarily. But, don't forget to educate the workers, the laborers as to how to proceed to create change, unite, organize and commit to a cause for "positive" change. I wish all DR people, peace, "lots of courage", prosperity, happiness and a full stomach. I see lots of women that are left with 2-3 children. The young ladies have to be educated so that they won't become pregnant, primarily. Men must also be educated about taking responsibility with regard to the same: the children they have conceived or prevention of pregnancies. This is the saddest thing for me. The children do suffer the consequences of such negligence.

La Romana area is generating large increase in business. Tends to be quite dry and good scenery, beaches.
Nice resorts and many apartments.

for example at Bayahibe.
Hope there are many more flights as this area grows in popularity.

You can get first-time tourists to come using phony hype. However if you want them to keep coming back, you need to fulfill the promise. That is not happening. The tourism industry will die without repeat business.
