Santo Domingo.– During January-May 2011 a total of 52,491
British tourists, equivalent to three percent of the 1.7 million
visitors that traveled to the Dominican Republic, visited the country. In this period Dominican airportsreceived 2.1
million passengers, 4.3% more than during the same time period in 2010.
Nearly 1.2 British tourists visited the
Dominican Republic during the 2005-2010 period. Ninety percent of these tourists came in through
the Punta Cana International Airport, located on the far eastern tip of the island, while the rest came in through the Puerto Plata
airport, the north coast’s most important tourism destination.
Great Britain has become the country’s fourth largest tourism marketplace
in Europe, and the sixth worldwide. In order of importance, the
country’s most important markets in Europe are France, Spain, Germany,
England and Italy.
Last year nearly 1.2 million European tourists visited the Dominican Republic through local international airports.

Sterling is at a very low level ,,even against the dollar ,,so the exchange rate is not the reason .And as danny says he is always on his fishing boat in miami ,,it would be impossible for him to be also at Punta Cana trying to see what tips are given by the Brits ...so I suggest his entire posting is quite fanciful
Thanks to the Brits for coming here

You need to appreciate that tipping in the U.K. is not as commonplace as in the U.S. for example where it is more or less a requirement added to a bill or you are given a note advising you that a tip of 15 to 25% of the bill is normal. A tip in the U.K. is given as a reward for the service provided over and above the norm.
Most U.K. tourists only have the package tour option at an all inclusive resort because that is what is being promoted through travel agents there. They are generally advised not to leave the resort "as it is not safe to do so unaccompanied" so the only time they do is on an organized excursion.
Most Brits also do not speak any Spanish so alone in a country where English is not common place is a problem. Unlike Spain for example where English is generally spoken in tourist resorts.

of course, he is saying this on good authority, being an expert on hotel matters. so, Atabey, give us a description of this package, which is better than the one in Jamaica. then, when you are done, tell us why Jamaica was voted the number 1 caribbean destination in the latest rankings. now, do not run away and hide from this question like you did when i pointed out your herculean ignorance regarding Obama and the14th amendment issue. you blustered in like a foul wind, and, when confronted with facts, you scurried away like a cockroach, never to be heard from in the thread again. i believe that one poster described it as ¨talking out your ass¨.

Good news - expanding market. Punta Cana is becoming very attractive in the international market.
Competition for the British pound is fierce. US travel restrictions have hepled and the Middle East, Dubai etc. is not fully up to speed. Africa has had problems.
The difference in price between Ibiza and the DR is getting less as more modern aircraft are used.

danny - there is plenty of bad to say about Florida and many other parts of the US from a tourists viewpoint.
The parts of the DR oriented to tourists - Samana peninsula , Punta Cana, Bahihibe and area, provide a huge range of offering well up to and in many cases surpassing international standards.

danny you must have a good party with jimHarrington and gmiller one night and have a really good DR bash ,, how can you write such nonsense about the DR and still have two daughters being educated here ,
From: United States
well, i guess that if the purpose of your vacation is what you allude to, they do provide a better package.
From: Canada
People will chose according to how good and complete a package is with the easiest possible flights.. More and more, people look for all inclusive trips. When people have one week holiday, they want a no problem, no hastle, no worry trip! They consult Trip Advisor. If you have a longer stay, then it's possible to combine an all inclusive and time for touring. Over the years and after about 15 trips to the DR, we have done both and appreciated both ways. However, recently, we would not go far from the resort. We chose to visit other countries in the last few years : Costa Rica, Jamaica, St. Thomas, Cuba, as well as a few trips in Europe. DR will have to continue to work on quality and security because there is a lot of competition out there! About tips : in many countries, tips are included in the price of a restaurant meal. AND, many all inclusive packages specify in block letters that tips are included. Many reasons for this.
From: Canada
....... 1) Most all inclusive offer buffet style meals; it's not always easy to figure out who / what to tip. 2) It avoids bring / having cash. 3) It avoids facing situations where for the most basic "service", (ex. getting someone to bring up toilet paper because someone else forgot to put some...) a tip is expected. 4) People want tips in US $ or other currencies even for the least thing done. 5) It avoids comparisons and two levels of service between tourists. They all paid the same for their trip. 6) It avoids being bothered by "too eager" people who want tips for anything.
I'ts then up to the tourists to decide, based on EXTRA quality if they want to leave more than what was already included in their package. I did write extra quality. If you pay for a 5 star quality, you expect a five star quality.
