Santo Domingo- American Airlines announced the installation of self service check-in machines in front of the carrier’s service counters, in the Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata airports.
American Airlines said the machines feature passport readers to expedite the airport check-in process for travelers, making it more flexible and faster.
“We know that our passengers will enjoy the convenience, speed and reliability of this self-check in service, with which they can choose their seat, tag their luggage and register for flight,” said Oliver Bojos, American Airlines director in Dominican Republic. "As always our agents will be available to attend those who wish to make their check-in the traditional manner.”
How does it work?
The passenger begins by passing their passport or through inserting their credit card through reader in the machine and selecting their itinerary.
If the passenger is traveling with passport which the machine cannot read, they should simply follow the instructions on the machine’s screen to do so manually.
After completing the identification process, a boarding pass will be printed.
If a passenger requires some assistance during the process to verify the visa, travel documents, error in the name and expired passports, agents are available to help them complete the transaction.
If they have luggage to check, the self-service can also be used:
You go through the check-in with the automatic machine and then register suitcases in the counters designated “Luggage Only”, the same ones used for people who check-in via the Website or in some of the American Airlines service offices.
AA agents may require a review of your travel documents before finalizing your check-in process. For more information on the self-service, visit http://www.aa.com.do/i18n/urls/selfService.jsp

american ailines is in negotions with boeing co. to replace 38% of its current fleet by purchasing at least 250 aircraft. this is roughly $15 billion order.
they are also talking with europe's airbus to replace american's oldest single-aisle jets the 220md's 80's.
be careful of the so called discount airline SPIRIT. as i said many times on this site they are not so discount.
spirit now has a one dollar charge if u use their self-check in machines at the airport.
if u go to the counter the charge is $5 for the ticket agent to proccess your ticket, they charge for carry-on luggage, they charge for all check in luggage, if u want to get a seat on-board of your choice they charge u around $20-25 dollars, the y charge for the soda and all foods served on board.

Yes but then the imbeciles at the door to immigration don't recognize the new boarding passes (they don't recognize the ones you can print at home for the past year either.

Many people in these lines could hardly use a smartphone... How do you expect them to check in alone? Have you noticed how long it takes island people to board the plane? There is always someone in the wrong seat, or the carry on is too large.

I agree with XWILL7- You'll see AA customer service reps doin it for them so there really is no progress....lines, will still be same the same. Bottom line- you have to be smarter than the equipment you're working with with.....Nice try though....

I avoid Spirit for many different reasons. I was checking in at Orlando and the trailer park woman behind the counter was asking for residency and child custody documents. Those were provided and she said she couldn't accept them, they were in Spanish and she didn't have a translator available. She was worried she'd get fired by contractor employer and they told her that day that she had to call an interpreter, but don't do it as it affects their transaction per hour performance. Not that AA is perfect, but you don't get nickeled and dimed like Spirit, with contract workers that just dream to get a TSA job.

I hate these self service check ins , when going to the USA.. You have to put in the hotel where you are staying in the USA and the address and 90% of the time the stupid machine will not accept it and you have to wait until some attendant tries to solve the situation ,,,then you have to bring the bags to a counter. I wonder what the savings really are
The jet blue self service check in at JFK works well when returning to the DR as it does not ask for much information.

It's a great idea, but a lot of people will have a hard time using these machines, specially if they have never used one before. But one the other hand we all learn at some point.
From: Dominican Republic
Jim Harrington, “You take a monkey out of the jungle but you can't take the jungle out of the monkey”, this is only true with “White Monkeys”. For some reason they just can’t learn. I think this is because, their brains are too small. this is what we were told in school, as kids.
