SANTO DOMINGO. -  Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia announced Friday the construction of a modern cruises terminal in the town Maimon, at a cost of US$65 million, generating around 30 million dollars in its first year in operation.

He said the terminal will positively impact the province and can simultaneously berth two boats totaling at least 4,000 passengers.

Garcia said an investment of this breadth by the Carnival Corporation guarantees the project’s success, expeditious construction, and the massive presence of cruise passengers. “The speed of the work stems mostly because that  investment doesn’t require any financing or Dominican Government facilities for the investors.”

For Giora Israel, Carnival Corporation senior vice president for Ports Development and Destinations, the terminal’s construction is expected to start October 1.

The terminal will occupy 50,000 square meters at Maimón Bay, construction will last two years, and provide 800 direct jobs.

The resort city of Puerto Plata has been demanding the construction of a cruise ship port for several years to restore the province’s splendor, characterized like tourist resort in the 70 and 80s.

From this part of the island I can only guess what the tugs from that area in the transportation business are thinking since they will want to have their share, and might also want to control it.

Well there goes Puerto Plata.

What a spit in the face. Even Dominicans must dislike POP.

Now what was it I heard that empty suit LF was going to invest $700MM USD for POP. I guess just not POP proper.

This is Carnivals money and they will build it where they feel is best for them .....they are not stupid as they are the largest in the world and have very sharp pencils they own .....Carnival Corporation & plc brands with eleven individual cruise lines, and operate a combined fleet of 96 ships totaling more than 160,000 beds with 10 new ships on order. Executive control of each brand is given by its geographical location, the Carnival Corporation monitoring operations in North America, Carnival UK control of operations in the United Kingdom and Costa Cruises controlled Group operations in the rest of Europe . P & O Cruises Australia is operated by Carnival UK as a sister company P & O Cruises.

First of all Disney is synonymous with ultra clean and absolute security, that is why it is #1 in child proof destinations. Hopefully they will use the port.

My choice would have been Maimon and if they actually have "control" over those transportation/vendor thugs it will be a great thing for the North coast.

The first time a family with children get taken for a ride in one of those non-air-conditioned rolling junk heaps and charged $30 USD to see the garbage on the sides of the roads and beach in POP.

That will be the last time. But Dominicans do not have the "repeat" business mentality.

they should have stuck this new financial dream in PP, but el Pres.. won't fork over the money to build a new port in PP! Years ago he made the promise to build a new port for PP and playa dorado.... The drawings were prepared... the pres just backed out of the deal!! They are already phucking up every bay on the north coast... now they want to do the same for maimon!!! they're just going to ruin another beautiful bay and area for some tourist spot ..... how long will this one last??????

Very good news indeed.

Of course, Maimon being a small town, passengers will be shuttled to POP. Unless they decide to use the RIU hotel area as gift shop restaurants night life and leave POP for dead..

At any event let's hope it's not just another hot air balloon. Let's also pray so they don't fluck it up between the usual transport/souvenirs/hos/thieves Mafias.

Hey Mucholoco,

WTH do you know about Mykonos? When was last time you were there-if ever? I was there and in Santorini two years ago, and actually liked former much better. Mykonos is crowded and difficult to find your way around. Best thing I saw there was Petros II, the bay pelican. Also, the Isle of Ios, a couple of miles off Mykonos.

Way too many tourists and the OUZO totally sucks....right on par with turpentine. Can't believe I bought that crap and brought it all the way back to the states. Good thing is that I got Tupapaupa to also try it and he hated it and landed on his posterior for indeterminate time. Perhaps you should drink OUZU daily, while hitting bong, that way you'll be permanently high and at least we'll be able to rationalize your permanent state of incoherence.

I frequent the Greek Isles. Season is everything and it is hugely popular in high season with good reason - Super Paradise is the beach of legend. Santorini is also wonderful! No concrete monstrosities such as they need to bulldoze in POP and give the architects and sponsors jail sentences; make their graves anonymous for bringing disgrace on their land!

Ouzo is an acquired taste for the connoisseur! Yes, the local special rum would be more suitable.
Anyway we can hope there is now a more intelligent and educated generation now; the morons are hopefully gone. Now its just dynamite and bulldozers to redevelop the POP area.

Mickey is going to build his private destination for Carnival Cruise Lines. Most of the products will be shipped in and once construction is done you will be amazed how few Dominican locals will be employed.
Old man Arison didn't create his empire by being stupid. Jr. Didn't make it a dynasty by being sentimental.
BTW They have the same project ready to go on 3 other islands. Whichever Government bends over the most will actually get to see it built. The other 3 will just be left to wonder.

Great for the rich empty suit politicians and entrepeneurs but a sad day for poppy and the kids . Yes this will greatly enhance tourism on costa norte but to whos benefit and at whose and what expense ?
Do you people really think Carnival invested this money in Leos coffers just to bring 650,000 people a year to see flipper jump through hoops at Ocean World ? This investment is meant to give tourism more than a shot of botox but rather a permanent facelift that well extends into the Sosua and Caberete areas as well which clearly explains the recent crackdowns and random acts of 'ETHNIC CLEANSING" that have been taking place in these towns that are being marketed as the next family fun destination in the D.R that the ministry of tourism hopes will come to fruition very soon.

buses and taxis will take the tourists over to central park in pop, their they will find a guide and the guides for their30% from the gifts shops will bring the gringos to these shops.
as i have written many times before
ALL THE SHOPS SELL THE SAME THING,
ALL THE SHOPS TELL THE TOURISTS THAT ALL THE THINGS IN THEIR SHOP WHERE MADE BY DONINICANS, NOT TRUE MOST IF NOT ALL ARE MADE BY THE HAITIANS, IN TURN THE DOMINICAN SHOP OWNERS BUY IT FROM THEM AT A VERY LOW PRICE.
THEN ITS THE AMBER MUSEUM AND I GUESS FUN CITY AND MAYBE THE CABLE RIDE.

Europeans, Americans, South Americans are the main market for full service cruises from the DR.

For Americans and Canadians it maybe is as cheap to fly from many departure points to La Romana to start a cruise than to Miami. Plus for those who already know Miami its and additional exotic 'port of call'.

Some clients may prefer the more international nature of the cruise.

Hotels are now in place to support pre and post departure nights.
Over the years DR has a better weather record than the Miami area.

Cruise lines should be able to offer better facilities out of La Romana.

It's a terrible thing to build this cruiseline port in such a pristine place as Bahía de Maimon!

I’m not against the port, but it’s location….That area should be a national park, it has a beautiful rock mountain that looks like a chimney or muffing I believe it's a granite monolith. These hotels, the Riu, shouldn’t even there in the first place!

This Maimon area it’s just gorgeous and should had been made a National Park for our people and future generation to enjoy, instead of giving it to hotels, and now a cruise line.

That is too bad for Dominicans, seriously, that area should be taken back or bought back by the government, because, it’s amazingly beautiful!! One of the best in the country, and only few Dominicans know about it.
