Santo Domingo.– Dominican Republic’s international
airports handled over two million passengers during the
first semester of this year, more than 82,621 than the figure registered during the same period in 2010, which means that tourist arrivals grew by 4.3% .
The airports
received 2.4 million passengers, representing a 3.6% increase from last
year’s numbers.
According to experts, the main reason for this jump is the 47.7% increase
experienced in tourists coming in from South America, mainly Argentina (
20,851), Brazil (19,366), Chile (6,076), Colombia (3,307) and Peru
(2,866).
Tourists from North America accounted for 32,721. From this total,
29,895 came from the United States and the rest from Canada and Mexico.
Today, Americans represent 34.2% of tourist arrivals, while Canadians
make up 22.7%, representing 57.4% of all arrivals. Europe represents 8.5% of all arrivals, South America 9.2%, and Central
America and the Caribbean 4.4%.
From January through June the number of visitors
from Russia jumped by 59.2% (19,329), Germany by 5.6% (5,064), Italy by
8.2% (4,063) and France, by 1.9% (2,634).

I await the rebuttal of the man with the magic 8 ball .....as he and the other Nabobs scream fraud and cooked numbers .....We are very fortunate to be where we are at this moment considering the world economic situation.....I will make no forecasts however as Armageddon may still await in the coming decade
From: Dominican Republic
None of these numbers make any sense. Do the math....at one point they say 4.3%...then one sentence later...3.6%. There have certainly been more than 32721 visitors from North America...if not, then we are in VERY SERIOUS shape!
This appears to be yet another flawed report from "experts".
LOL...."Tourists from North America accounted for 32,721. From this total, 29,895 came from the United States and the rest from Canada and Mexico.""
So...only 2,826 from Canada....AND.... Mexico combined? That would mean 471 a month! Experts report!!! You can fit that many on two Air Transat flights out of Toronto or Montreal daily!
Are these "experts" a result of our under-funded educational system?

Unless they get control of the drug situation the tourism is in danger - I was just there and it reminds me of Colombia during the time of Escobar- Pay your soldiers and police a decent wage so they will not get corrupted and deal with this issue as once the first tourist is killed watch how fast the bookings start to drop

I dont believe the report at all. There are so many less flights this year than last year how are these people all getting here?
Some basic math 1/2 as many flights means half as many seats. Less cruise ships means less people.
Our idiot corrupt officials want nobody to know the real numbers. That is more of the truth.
We are simply surviving on money generated by corruption and the drug trade. The majority of people keep getting poorer and have less money to spend while a select few make their money through corruption and drugs and of course some of it makes it through the rest of the economic market.
Look at all the partially built and empty construction projects. The only people who can afford that are the ones looking to launder their money.
If the international community ever got their act together and simply stopped the flow of drugs in and outside the island our economy would be crushed.
From: Dominican Republic
Ok...I see...the numbers represent the increase year over year? Or ....well...um....who knows!
From: Dominican Republic, Cabrera
Blutarsky you are correct the airlines are very efficient but what is reproduced here doesn't make any sense. First they say the increase is 4.3% but on the next line 3.6% They say North American visitors total 32,721 representing 57.4% of all arrivals? When I went to school 57.4% of 2.4 million would have been considerably more than 32,721.
I have no doubt if the source of these statistics was the airlines their figures would be correct but the way they have been reproduced here makes them meaningless and contradictory. I think who ever wrote this needs to go back to the source and read it again and amend this article so that the true figures are accurately reported.
From: Dominican Republic
Underpar...thanks for the recommendation. You can go on believing all that is written. Why not go to the Central bank website and research yourself? I know that takes some effort...but give it a try!
The article states that arrivals from the US are up by 29895. Yet comparing the spreadsheets year over year, the reality is an increase of 25471....which accounts for a 15% discrepancy in what they print and what they report.
Although numbers are up...with this simple example of inconsistency...probably not as reported here
From: Dominican Republic
OK...I see...one report is residency and the other is nationality. Answers my question.
From: Dominican Republic
What a load of BS. Where in the hell do they ever get there numbers from?
From: Dominican Republic
The 4.3 % is total increase and the 3.6% is only air arrivals, so .7% came by ship, but the numbers of increased arrivals by country does not match the total. The reported increases from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and North America alone indicate an increase of more than 92,000 and adding in the other countries provided brings the total to over 116,000 compared to the total of 82,621 indicated in the article and not all source countries are listed so the error can only get worse. Although 2.4 million is a rounded number for airport arrivals the 3.6% indicated increase represents 83,397 so they figures don't add up that way either. Still if the simple fact is, the number of tourists has increased by perhaps more than 80,000 that is good news.

As far as the central product is concerned, tourism, DR is well up with the leaders and way ahead of some other destinations.
You can review tripadvisor and there are thousands of recommentations from well travelled people for the DR. Major properties have been built and others extensively refurbished.
Top holels in say Clearwater Beach in Florida rate 4.5 stars - likewise in leading resorts in the DR.
300 - 400 dollars a night is a typical room rate in Florida off season - but this not include meals, drinks, transfers and misc charges.
Other aspects of the service, for example airports can be outstanding in the DR as can excursions.
It would be fine if people consulted these web sources and drew the conclusion that many DR offerings are top tier in the region. This is being rewarded by increased arrivals - that is good news.

Resorts with services is where its at Worldwide. Greece has the similar problem with 'resort areas' with a large amount of small businesses.
People want to pay 1000 euros or something for 1/2 weeks mostly inclusive and not have the hastle of bills, transport etc. in general.
Fortunately the operators in the DR have adapted and superb renovations of existing resorts plus additional developments are proving popular and competitive.
POP must be a very small part of the total DR market.
