Puerto Plata.- The resort city’s hotel personnel laid off during Dominican Republic’s low tourist season has been rehired as the substantial increase in tourists has boosted occupancy, said Julio Almonte, spokesman for the Playa Dorada Hotels, Condominiums and Business Owners Association.
The hotelier, quoted by listin.com.do, said a rising demand for human resources accelerated the process to reinstate the employees in the Costa Dorada and Cofresí hotels.
As published by the Central Bank the hotel occupancy rate for the destination formed by Puerto Plata, Cofresí, Maimón, Sosúa and Cabarete fell to 53% during 2011, and dipped to critical levels in the low season.
The fact that Puerto Plata was the tourism destination which posted the worse hotel occupancy during that period brought extreme uncertainty to local hoteliers, forcing layoffs of thousands of workers.
Almonte, who’s also manager of the Celuisma Tropical hotel, said the hoteliers concentrated in attracting more tourists in the high season and will continue with the strategy.

How come the government Tourism Department has never acknowledged any drop in demand, ever?
Perhaps the current re-hiring is in anticipation of the annual Xtian pilgrimage too Higuey?

You would think it would be obvious to such a smart guy like you!
The Tourism Dept's job is to PROMOTE & MARKET tourism in the D.R. Promoting Bad news is not part of their Job Description.

They're boasting Costa Do and Cofresi.
Unfortunately, nothing about the ones that are still closed in Playa Dorada, Sosua and Cabarete.
The picture is still gloomy..

Think the local goverment needs to fess up regarding crime there. Just last week an American tourist was attacked on the beach outside his hotel - stabbed 7 times, including in the neck (carotid artery) and both lungs, then left for dead. Not exactly an inviting story, huh?

What a defamatory statement against POP,,,,,no american tourist been hurt in POP sinse the great depression

Ha ha. The ususal "invisible" tourists. Today I talked with a tour operator in Playa Dorada. Yes, there are more tourists than in summer. But the shops complain that there are mainly Canadians that came with special offers (= very cheap flights) and now flood the shops, touching everything but buying nothing. In Sosúa it's a sad show. After Politur's hunt after "witches" (prostitutes) last winter, many of the visitors who witnessed that absurd abuse of anybody without a penis, preferred to go to other places (Brazil, Venezuela, Thailand ...), where they can see nice girls during their holidays instead of brute policemen that arrest any woman, even if she's accompanied by a man.

The Dominican Republic is the world's brothel. How sad that you treat your girls, and Haitian girls, that way.
Is Sosua the weekend retreat for Leonel? Probably he visits his Italian FRIEND, Casciati, the ex-associate of the murdered American lawyer, Turlow, for girls and payoffs.

antonio1,
Are you referring to the Great Dominican Depression of 2011 or 2010?
Flowers,
I think you need to authenticate your story with a link.

What about the pregnant woman who was physically abused by the manager of Casa Colonial in Playa Dorada? There was an article in the US paper about it.

@RoyStone
I'd authenticate my story if the local press would report it. I can't find any report about it but check the local hospital, Bourginal, there - it is my brother-in-law.

I'll take your word for it. Can you give us more details?

Having just returned from POP I can tell you the resorts are not full, many are closed, not a lot of tourist down on the boulevard, and the garbage seems to be coming back again despite the recycle bins ...
POP is hurting badly and think what you will but things may turn around once Maimon's new cruise ship berth is up and running ... hopefully none of ships will hit unrecorded underwater rocks and match the fiasco of the current cruise ship situation in Italy ....
