Santo Domingo. More than 100 social organizations, and authorities of San José de Ocoa and Monsenor Noel provinces demanded that the work on the North-South highway resume, and gave the government a 40 day deadline to disclose the contract with the contractor Odebrecht.

In a town hall meeting in the mountain town of Rancho Arriba, the groups also demanded that the work be and included in the 2013 budget.

In the event organized by the organizations attended 1,500 people, who called the road’s construction non-negotiable given its impact in to spur the economy and overall development of the two regions.

They asked the population to be on the alert during the entire construction process, to ensure its quality, so the money spent is managed transparently and to conclude it without interruption.

This is wonderful!

The people are beginning to feel empowered, willing to take on the government. Maybe, with this singular step, we could be witnessing the genesis of the "Dominican spring".

Yes, the money might not be there to complete this economically important project now; however, the gesture is infinitely more significant than the road itself.

Hopefully, the next march would be to demand accountability. Personally, I'd hope they go after Celso M. and get to the bottom of the missing $500M originally designated to pay the electric companies. How could such a large amount of money simply disappear? That is big-even by Dominican standards, with abject aherence to rule of law and ready impunity for those who perpetrate high crimes . Inquiring minds need to know, and they want justice served. Heads should roll and maybe some should hang.

"How could such a large amount of money simply disappear?"

The question should be "how many other times in the past has this kind of amount just disappeared" We are talking about the DR here! As history shows all to clear this is the norm and not the abnormal...

It was my understanding this project was finished. They are people that keep sayin all the work bigotes did. I think this is by much a more important work than that' whole in the middle of Santo Domingo
