Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina said his Administration could resume the project to establish a national airline, combined with private sector capital.
Medina instructed the Civil Aviation Agency and the Tourism Ministry to as soon as possible prepare the entire proposal for a carrier, a project abruptly discontinued a few years ago.
The chief executive met in the National Palace with Spanish mogul Juan Jose (Pepe) Hidalgo, owner of Globalia, and Air Europa airline, which flies daily to Dominican Republic, Chile, the U.S., Argentina , Brazil and other Latin American countries, as well as most European cities.
"I’m very pleased with the determination shown by President Danilo Medina to relaunch this great project, which no doubt will put the Dominican Republic in condition to reach the goal of doubling the number of tourists in around four years," Hidalgo said after the meeting of around one hour, accompanied by Dominican ambassador in Spain, César Medina.
The national airline’s initial daily flights would be to New York and Miami, home to the largest number of Dominicans living in the U.S.

Wow,

Everytime Medina has a meeting it last an hour. I don't see how they can cover a big deal like this in 1 hr.

stillhere, this is just a recurrent joke. 3 years ago, we heard the same plan. airlines were going out of business every day, yet we heard that the DR was starting up a new airline. i said that it was a crazy idea, and posters all called me a hater, and told me that lines like Braniff, Hawaiian, and Pan Am went out of business because they did not have a good model, and that the DR had figured out what it took to run a successful airline. fast forward...the airline was formed, and went bankrupt without flying a single passenger. i kid you not!

Why when Jetblue does such a great job would they even consider this. With jetfuel so high how do they expect to fund it and stay in business. Try improving your schools first before you go off and do this. Airlines, are struggling. to quote sir Richard Branson. How does a billionaire become a millionaire, start an airline

The DR should split itself in half. Let the PRD take the portion with Haiti and make Santiago the new capital. Let the PLD have the remaining area with santo domingo as the capital. The people can decide which country they want to live in east Dominican republic or west Dominican republic. The trade between the two countries would create millions of jobs

Airlines are very successful. Ryanair made 401 million euro last reporting year up rising 26%; for example - big European airline. Average fare about 65 euro. Over 1,300 routes. Tui a big travel and airline group, Europes biggest ; Thomas Cook etc. reported massive increase in profits underlying 306 million pounds.
Good time to start an airline as more fuel efficient airliners are now available and tourism is rapidly increasing.

Before you get ahead of yourself IRS Atabey read this, especially the part about the God of Tourism:
Which taxation reform?
Diario Libre executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada comments on the fiscal reform in the newspaper's editorial today, Wednesday 17 October.
"Basically two types of fiscal reforms can be made. One that contributes to re-launching the economy by way of more revenues for a more rational state, and at the same time promotes private investment and facilitates actions by economic agents.
The other is simply an increase in taxation even if everything else is affected, including democratic governance. With the latter, the government would continue walking like the famous man (a reference to the Johnny Walker slogan "keep on walking"), recession is created, jobs are squelched and the possibility of increased economic development of the nation.

With his proposal, President Medina's government seems to have chosen this last road and is stabbing itself dead with a knife, "like Chacumbele." (Tejada is referring to the famous Cuban story/song whereby womanizer Chacumbele was followed through the streets of Havana by a madly-in-love-woman who found him with his new lover, and proceeded to carve him up with a knife. The phrase entered Cuban mythology and refers to when a person meets death by his own foolish actions.)
For example: President Medina has spoken about increasing the number of tourists to 10 million. Will the tourists want to come to a more expensive country, with an estranged social climate and growing poverty?
While it is true that incentives will be maintained for the tourism sector, nobody will be able to avoid the increase in costs that the reform will bring. If next year tourism season is sold, who will absorb these?
Do not be surprised if the hotel chains start leaving the country.

And we could review almost all the segments of economic activity and see that none will be favored by the reform.
Then, is there sense in considering a reform that creates only losers?
We still have time to think this over.

Air Jamaica operated a first class , creative airline, which was run by one of the brilliant minds in the Caribbean, Butch Stewart, of Sandals fame. they did all they could to modernize the thing, and run it efficiently. nothing worked, and they had to sell it to Trinidad. sad, but that is airlines for you.

Actually an airline is an interesting business, if run properly and with good routes it could bring income to the country. the problem is that they will need good and advance airlines to compete with others airlines, and they cannot do a fake fast job when workin with an aircraft. Something that dominicans sadly don't understand...
This time I'll like to see what will happen...
