Santo Domingo.- Sans Souci Ports president Lisandro Macarrulla on Sunday said to achieve the tourism sector’s objectives as president Danilo Medina proposed during his campaign, cruise tourism must be maximized.

He said Santo Domingo must be adequately exploited as a destination, because it hosts the country’s biggest cultural events. "It takes a serious marketing and efficient plan exclusive to the city of Santo Domingo, which allows increasing the number of travelers who visit us."

The business leader said as a tourism destination Santo Domingo needs an international campaign to exclusively promote it as America's First City, and called the Ozama River’s cleanup also urgent. "Joint efforts and actions are urgent such as the problem of the Ozama and Isabela rivers, which belong to everybody and nobody at the same time."

Macarrulla said current trends place cruise tourism among the world’s fastest growing ways of leisure travel, as much as 6% annually, in a subsector he affirms directly generates an average of US$11.0 million per 100,000 cruise passengers.

The river...if started today at this very minute, would be a 20 year project starting with the eviction of 20% of Santo Domingo's population that live on the flood plains. It would not go over well with those evicted leading to confrontations that destabilize the area and make it less appealing to the cruise visitor.

All things take time and there is always a price to pay. Simply put...compared to other ports of call...Santo Domingo has little to offer...yes...some history...but little else. It is simply too big and impersonal. You have to search for everything.

Cruise passengers are a tough crowd, you have to spoon feed them everything so it'll take a lot of effort and money to get them off the ships. I love cruising cause it's very convenient, but I realize that only a few get off the boat and go on excursions. The others need to see a beautiful port and town to get off the boat. So this means we will have to invest heavily in the surrounding areas.

Keep dreaming DR! Cruise Ships do not like lawless insecure stops, ripoff Banana Republic destinations that have little to offer other than dirty streets, crime, congested traffic, poor roads, too urban environment, visible poverty, worthless shopping if not duty free and general poor quality relative to other destinations. SDQ is so far away from that goal that it is laughable and will chase it forever if they continue to be uncompetitive.

Reality check less and less people are going on vacation the world economy is down and people are staying home. Look at all the hotels that are closing down. Why spend money on something that is gong down the tube. Tourists are a thing of the past. Fix the infrastructure in the country and stop crime and maybe we will be ready if the world economy changes.

anybody who believes that the DR will benefit from cruise ships needs a brain transplant. this goofball tells us that tourists spend, on average, 110 dollars in port. yes, but on what? there is a little thing called leakage. that is the amount of money which leaves the economy. in all inclusive tourism, roughly 81% of the dollar gets repatriated, while the DR keeps 19%. the cruise business is not so charitable. some studies show that only 5% of cruise revenue stays in caribbean islands.
