La Romana, DR.– La Laguna Beach, in Bayahibe-La Romana, was certified as an International Blue Flag, a certification awarded to beaches that meet strict environmental requirements, safety and cleanliness controls.

The Blue Flag Program is owned and run by the non-government, non-profit organization the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), whose goal is to provide an effective pro-environment management of beaches.

Blue Flag beaches also require the regular monitoring of surrounding coral reefs by Reef Check, and mandatory life guards every 100 meters.

Currently there are 18 beaches in the Dominican Republic with this certification.

The beach at Bayahibe that is open to the public has shrunk so much over the years as the hotels place guards over the borders to stop the public from entering yet hotel guests have no problem using the public beach ...It is a very clean and safe beach with gentle waves and very nice to go to .. But even that is increasingly hard and more of a trek now ..
