PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic. - President Danilo Medina on Saturday headed ribbon cutting for the Four Points by Sheraton Punta Cana Village, and groundbreaking for construction of the Puntacana Hotel Westin Resort & Club, both of the Puntacana resort group.
Westin Resort & Club Punta Cana is part of a alliance between the Puntacana Group and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, whose around 1,000 properties in 100 countries make it among the world's leading hotel and hospitality chains.
Four Points by Sheraton Punta Cana Village is the result of a franchise agreement between the two business groups, to be managed by Puntacana.
The new 124 room hotel, built at a cost of RD$600.0 million (US$150.0 million), has areas for all kinds of events, meetings, conferences, exhibits, weddings, and a 24-7 business center with cutting-edge visual technology and wireless Web.
Several senior officials attended the ceremonies, including Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia, as well as the business leaders Frank Rainieri, Haydee Kuret de Rainieri, Oscar de la Renta, Robert Kheel and Arnold Jacobs.

As far as I am concerned, these ribbon cutting activities diminish the office of the presidency of the DR.

Roy it is the same world wide ..the chains of hotels working with the booking agencies are nearly all owned by groups from the USA, and a few European countries ...all having their headquarters in the country with the lowest corporate tax rate and imposing management charges on the various branches in aother countries to maximise their after tax profit in the country of the headquarters .All the DR can do is impose the bed tax and incoming passenger tax..
The only other thing we can do is to encourage the tourists tospend money outside their hotel but that is very hard to do .

you are all missing the big picture here! $150M U.S. for a 124 room hotel! OMG! What are they building this place with? Solid Gold? What a scam. With those costs, and the eventual over run costs, there is NO WAY this project can 'pencil'. Talk about throwing good money after bad! YOU can bet Ranierie has none of his own money in this project. He may have ODLR's and Julio I's money invested, but any smart guy would stay away from a project with over $1M per room costs. Who do they expect to sell the rooms to? The $ per night rates will be too expensive to any smart person to want to spend and not be on the water. This project does not make much sense. IF Punta Cana runs the hotel is will be just as bad as the current PC resort and hotel. Everything they touch turns to you know what.

The only other thing we can do is to encourage the tourists tospend money outside their hotel but that is very hard to do .

Medina in affected areas
