Santo Domingo.- At a cost of more than RD$300.0 million, government and city authorities began building the May 30 Promenade, spanning five miles of the seaside highway also known as the Malecon, from Lincoln to Luperon avenues.

Santo Domingo mayor  Roberto Salcedo and Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo headed the groundbreaking at the site of the execution of the dictator Rafael Trujillo (Monumento Heroes de 30 Mayo) for the work to provide recreation for residents and the rising number of tourists expected to visit Santo Domingo in the coming years.

The work includes the construction and reconstruction of sidewalks and gutters, storm drains and ample parking for dozens of vehicles.

Castillo said the work could end up costing less than RD$300 million because of the management mechanism he said will be used.

He said the work will also include a portion of the damaged southern coast, with retaining walls to counter the effect of the strong waves and hurricanes, street lighting, sidewalks and royal palm trees and other native varieties in the entire area.

A lightrail going along the malecon would be phenomenal.

Words I don't see.... bins, more security and the removal of all the ugly unfinished or never to be finished buildings along the Malecon ....

And yes a tram line would be very good...

Our metro should have been a monorail, it's simpler, cheaper, less maintenance, looks more futuristic, and markets itself. Hopefully they'll consider it for the next lines of the metro.

For the malecon and zona colonial a cheap one train monorail would be perfect. For example this old technology, urbanaut.com/Technology%20Center%204(printable).htm

Danilo,

Your right! Either a light rail or a mono rail would have been more effective and probably would have circumvented and crisscrossed the capital by now!

They finally figured it out.. i've always said that the avenue needed major updating if they plan any future development on the avenue. Hopefully under this phase they can provide seawall protection underneath from incoming storms along the entire avenue.

Maybe even take away 1 lane from each direction to eliminate traffic volume and provide wider pedestrian access.
