Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.-  After more than three decades without a cruise ship in its port, the World Cruise, from the Bahamas arrived in the city Thursday, with 170 couples on board, or 340 passengers.

The travelers form part of the so called condo tourism that contracts transatlantic cruise ships to vacation in Caribbean and European countries.

The ship arrived at 7:30am when it was received by tourism and port authorities, after which the passengers toured visited historic sites and shops, spending thousands of dollars, to boost Puerto Plata’s economy.

"This will be a dynamic and a final launch cruise tourism, which started here in the eighties and nineties," said Deputy Tourism Minister Cesar de los Santos, adding that Puerto Plata port can expect as many as 2,000 cruise tourists weekly until February.

The company Carnival Corporation plans to start building next year a cruise terminal in Puerto Plata, which can receive two ships simultaneously, with around 4,000 passengers.

There is something wrong with the number 340 passengers. This would mean the ship was only about 15% to 20% occupied, which I do not belief.

170 couples spending thousands of dollars???? I don't think so.

The World is a cruise ship serving as a residential community owned by its residents. It carries between 100 and 300 residents and their guests.

ohhhhreally? I assume you are referring to the fact that a couple of these tourists were mugged and robbed?

You surely can't be trying to suggest a cruise ship with a few passengers docking at Puerto Plata was as a result of anything Danilo or the PLD have done!

While much of what is said negatively about Puerto Plata is true, there would not be any truth in it unless poverty forced people to do things unspeakable. And, to top it off poverty has a market group that come from others that have no care in exploiting those wishing to make money for whatever reason. When cruises dock, it is always a rush rush tour to only show them the "good" things. I suggest many fly to Puerto Plata and live for a week and not in Lifestyle Hacienda (OH HECK NO) or any other of the all inclusives.....then come back and speak.

There’s good and bad in everything surrounding us. To exclusively focus on one or the other, is wrong and smacks of a person with a prejudiced agenda.

To say ALL things happening or having to do with our DR is a negative event, or for that matter, hide the stench with perfume, is equally wrong.
Big problem with some posters here is that they go the extremes, mostly on the pessimistic side of the equation. For them, absolutely NOTHING is good news. There’s always some underlying crap that must be pointed to, that turns something helpful into something totally ugly and wrong.

One has to wonder what kind of person can see only crap in all items, actions, or facts in a given situation. As a matter of fact, even crap has its positive in being useful as fertilizer. But the sick minds of this site will never agree on the glass being half full. These are the radicals of this world whose deranged minds impede progress and drain the will to deal with the adversity at hand. They play no part in finding solutions, just pointing fingers.
I don’t pity the poor bastards. I wish them continued despair and misery.

went to the port to look at the ship. it is one huge mother. 11 stories high. it is a pity that it only carries a small amount of people, since it is not really a cruise ship, but a floating condominium.

POP is a beautiful town that has been used and neglected by the town big shots.
POP is $$$$$$ only to big shots such as the Brugals.
The deterioration of the Victorian buildings is a shame and a disgrace, a result of uncaring POP money people. And whoever designed the change to the POP park is an idiot, what a disaster.

Pto Pta went down hill due to competion from Punta Cana and money always follows to where it is will be most profitable. But please remember it was PP which started the tourism boom in the DR. However, the root cause of it's ills occured when authorities failed to adjust to trends and continued to use an outdated business model that at one time worked but later failed to produce the results and meet expectations. But it did however help introduce the DR to the international tourism markets. The end results are obvious, short term it was acceptable but long term was not sustainable. It attracted a low level, budget concious spending tourists which left minimal benefits to the country.

guillermone, POP failed because it was poorly planned, and hastily executed. the hotels were built on the cheap, and the owners milked them for all they were worth, without upgrading. the urban study was never done, and the services simply could not keep up with the tourist traffic. there were numerous lawsuits, when people came down with major intestinal illnesses. one group of maybe 1000 English people sued their tour operators, when they got sick in Cabarete. tour operators run tourism. their profit margins are razor thin. they cannot afford complaints , and lawsuits. so, if there are too many problems in a particular destination, they simply send the seats elsewhere. they NEVER ask hoteliers to upgrade. they have too many other choices. my buddy was sitting on the throne in a hotel in Playa Dorada, and the washbasin fell off the wall, narrowly missing his foot. imagine the problem if it hadn't , and had broken his ankle.

guillermone, when you have one weeks vacation, getting sick at the travel destination is a real bummer. this is a report on tours to POP

On questionnaires about their holiday in the Dominican Republic last summer, 29 per cent of the customers of a leading tour operator replied "Yes" to the question "Did you have a stomach upset that lasted for more than 24 hours during your stay?" In 1997, roughly twice as many said that they had been ill.
That year, according to Professor Rodney Cartwright, medical adviser to the Federation of Tour Operators, more tourists were getting ill "than in any other major package holiday destination". The illnesses were sometimes serious, involving salmonella and Giardia, and led to tour operators paying out large sums in compensation.

This is all lock of sanitation as well as the gvt neglect . The hotels should have a health manager aside of the administration manager and have the gvt foot the bill.Lock of supervision leads into
these problems.Once a gvt official is present as an inspector with a thread of closing them down
if they don't meet the expectation, you will see how many will fix the problem. Another thing is the potable water. The locals are used to non potable, but once the body gets used to potable water to go back ito hard it is impossible without experienceing MONTESUMA REVENGE.

Again the sewer system must be adress as well as organized tours with a tour director from the
locality to take them around the confine of the town into others by means of buses. They could reach Santiago and back and its surroundinmgs in 4 - 5 hrs. If they need an excort request
one since they are bringing in dollars as opposed to those politicians who get it and spend the
tax payers money on foolish things.
