Santo Domingo.– The Melia Santo Domingo Hotel will once again be managed by the Sheraton hotel chain after nearly 10 years of being operated by Spanish chain Sol Meliá.
The five-star, 245-room hotel, located in the Santo Domingo Malecón, opened in the seventies as part of the Sheraton chain. It is 30 minutes from the Las Americas International Airport and a few minutes away from the Colonial City.

So, what difference will this make?
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
Not too much .It is a hotel with little charm and to make it better ,Sheraton would need to construct a decent bar area and a much better dining area . At present , to be kind to the hotel , they are both remarkably ordinary

The complete answer is how large will the refurbishment be and what will it cost.....why do you think they stopped the Trucks along the Malecon....Sheraton is not an unimportant player in international hotels

From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
Well of course , if Sheraton are prepared to build a bar in a position overlooking the Caribbean and a dining room of decent quality , then they may be able to do something that the Melia Group could not , but it really will have to be a decent size makeover

If Sheraton wants in, there must be a good reason for it.
Could it be that these internationals are beginning to see DR, and specifically SD, as a much better/modern city that will attract more visitors? And that our capital may be emerging as an important destination to do business in?
Or am I being overly optimistic, and reading too much into it?

This property is privately owned and they not Sheraton will put up the money.....unlike the Juruagua which is owned by Marriott

Dump? Never been to this Hotel, but from the looks of the picture, it seems very nice. Also, I don't think Sheraton is into managing the kinds of flea bags found in SD, and probably, Havana.
From: Dominican Republic, calle A.Portes
I have stayed at this hotel several times when my home was being renovated. It is certainly not a complete dump ..it has a good car park that has good security , it has very pleasant bedrooms of a good size but with out of date bathrooms and it also has a good pool but the pool area looks very tired and .It is the ground floor and the next floor up that need a total make over .
I did not know it was privately owned but I am sure the management contract would stipulate who would pay for the improvements.

I stayed in the Melia during the "Serie del Caribe" and found it very pleasant and secure....the melia's frequent traveler program is one of the best worldwide.

I understand some areas may have decayed over time. It calls for renovation after almost 4 decades. However, this is certainly not a dump. The structure is very solid and the rooms are spacious, so is the lobby, the pool area is great. I recall going there in m youth, and feel the renovating will bring back its splendor. I guess Sheraton is watching closely the bright future of our country and the prominence of our city in the Americas.

Sheraton is rectifying a huge mistake that they made when they left the Santo Domingo, for greener pastures. Now they saw that they were missing out on the action ($$$), they've analyzed that the future is bright, and want to come back.
WELCOME back Sheraton to Santo Domingo. I hope to see CHASE Bank N.A. (or JP MORGAN CHASE), the next one to come back to Santo Domingo, because they are also missing out ($$$).
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT and shinning in SANTO DOMINGO.

Amen to that, Rokete. These Multinationals follow the money, and it seems it's trickling down a little at a time. SD could eventually become a major financial center!

My family used to go to the Sheraton since it was one of the nicest and newest hotels back in the eighties. All the big stars of the day used to go their. I hope that they can help the continuing revitalization of the area. Everytime time I go around that area I can see changes afoot. My dads brother just got evicted from the Zona colonial afte more than almost 30 years!

People.
I spent 28 years in the Hospitality Industry in the USA (28 years at Marriott, Hilton and others.). Responses above prove that none of you know squat about the industry. In this case, Sheraton is a "management" company. They "manage" the hotel, don't own it and are selected by the owner. They had no choice in the owner reverting back to their brand name. Owners select a brand name primarily for the "reservation" systems to book hotel rooms. It is presumed, the Spanish management team, did not have a productive "res" (for reservations) system.

Of course there are other benefits by putting a known name on the hotel. Unless a traveler knows "Sol Meliá.", when they look at names of hotels in the D. R., They would choose a name brand over one they are not familiar with. People come to the D. R. from all over the world. Name recognization can and usually is the deciding factor in selecting one hotel over another. No strategy from Sheraton.

RonEvane: Thank you for your comment. It struck a nerve with 1 ignorant individual who made comments about an industry, he has no knowledge of. He can't say anything intelligent, so he does what he does best. Make an absolute fool out of himself. He is so predictable.

To Wit: I do not respond to morons who make comments about something they have no clue how it works. But they continue to make fools out of themselves. It reminds me of some 5 year old in kindergarten, that says to another, "my father can beat up your father" and "like" childish comments. He is incapable to make any intelligent or adult comment since he doesn't know anything about the Hospitality Industry. So he resorts to the only thing he knows: "Kindergarten mentality".

He obviously has serious socialability problems, unable to converse with intelligent individuals. We all should have pity on him. He doesn't know any better. This is his only venue to vent. It makes him feel all grown up. The poor child.

CarpeDiem, There are quite a few of these nitwits, trying to skew the rest of us with their infantile minds and ever- negative attitudes. These dregs of humanity, irreparable illiterates that they are, who have not ever learnt the English language properly, represent the garbage and background noise on this site that irritates and pollute. I ignore them, or try to. Nothing of importance, relevance, or interest ever comes out of these come-mierdas’ waste of bandwidth

Thanks for your take on these numb nuts. You are "spot on". They never, I repeat "never" have any intelligent remark regarding the subject matter. It's a great hotel to stay if you travel often to SD. Not big, not crazy, not loud and close enough to the attractions. A few upgrades is all it needs.

Planning on traveling to D.R. soon, but I'm not familiar with the country. Anyone know about the hot spots. Or are Punta cana, colonial zone and puerta plata basically it. Also affordable is best.

Donniet,
there is a lot to see in DR, beyond those places. Las Terrenas, Rio San Juan, Cabarete, Luperon, Jarabacoa, La Romana, Bayahibe, Samana, Salto del Limon, Juan Dolio, Las Galeras, Punta Rucia, Monte Cristy, Cabrera, Nagua, those are other hot spots.
Let me know if you are interested in other interesting off the beaten path places, more typical Dominican sort of speak.

The Melia is very good and have been going there for quite some time since I have timeshares with melia property. However, here's an honorable mention to the TRopicana Hotel in the Essanche isabelita district. Stayed there for a week and they were great. Good prices too and made favorable impressions in traveladvisor.com too....
