Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. - Destruction of coral reefs, boats illegally parked within the 60 meters of beach, fish poachers, businesses without waste treatment systems and trash were what welcomed the authorities to Bavaro beach.

Tourism Vice minister Pedro Morillo, and environment and military officials inspected the damage to the coral reefs in the zone, with losses of as high as 40 meters in the case of the hotel Carabela, and in front of the hotel Barceló Dominican Beach, as much as one third of the beach.

Regional Environmental director Julio Aramis Mora warned boat owners and excursion businesses to halt the spill of fuel and oil in the sea, on the risk of damage to the environment, sea life and the reef.

The authorities also found the boat-taxis, which shuttle tourists from one beach to another, use the license issued for other activities.

Morillo said they’ll start by clearing debris and obstacles from the 60 meters of beach and coasts, but the problems of the boats parked more than 60 meters from shore will not be dealt with for now.

Truth is there were no plans or poor enforcement of exisiting plans to protect the environment. The construction boom from the 1990's to about 2005 removed a vast amount of the mangroves and coastal lands beneficial to the health of the reefs. The government approved the use of septic systems in residencial communities to support the building boom with the caveat there would be future conversion to treatment facilities. The septic systems still exist leaching its waste over time to foul the marine environment. Treatment facilities are wanting. The blame should not be placed upon entirely on lap of the boat owners and excursion businesses, the finger is being pointed only on them as they have high visibility. The true blame falls upon a lax government interested only on the monetary gains of dubious activities and developers who are more concerned about profit gained by not being forced to comply with regulation and codes that would protect the environment.

zooma, that posting of yours should be framed, and hung in a museum. the blight in this country stems from the fact that NOTHING is planned BEFORE it is done. it is all about quick results, and fast money, TODAY. when the crap hits the fan, out come the taliking heads, and opinion makers. look at Puerto Plata today. if people think that this ecological debacle is significant, just wait till the ocean going pirates, the cruise ships, hit Maimon, in force. then you will see irrevocable destruction.

Joise is right.

When Hippo was in Office the beaches were spotless and everybodycleaned up after themselves.

When Hippo was president the Power never went out. People respected Traffic laws and everybody farted rainbows.

anthonyC... you are joking, correct?

Hippo is too stupid to even know what environmentally friendly means.

If he can steal money, with no effort, he'd defecate in the drinking water supply directly.

Whew... Was confused for a minute anthonyC.

I see the minus morons were/are still confused about your post.

Of course if their Groundhogs day mentality does not let them remember what Hippo did, then there is no real hope for this cesspool of a country.

gmiller261,
The "farting rainbows" didn't give you a clue?
(loved it, AnthonyC, can I use it sometimes?)

On a serious note, they killed the coral years ago. Even a total clean-up and intercession by the good cardinal won't bring it back to life.

If you want to see living coral, go the Australia's Barrier Reef. They have laws, and they enforce them. Even so it is in danger.
