Santo Domingo. - The tour “Ruta del Chivo” (Route of the Goat) was inaugurated Monday, which retraces the places visited by the dictator Rafael Trujillo during the hours prior to his execution the night of May 30, 1961.
The specialized tourism agency Raices and the Dominican Tourism Competitiveness Partnership (CDCT) announced the innovative tour, with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The cultural three hour tour aims to familiarize visitors with aspects of the Trujillo dictatorship period marked by the idiosyncrasy of Dominicans, featuring anecdotes and information narrated by specialized guides.
Another feature is the use of automobiles from the 1950s and early 1960's, with drivers in garb of the period.
The Route’s first stop is the Memorial Museum of the Dominican Resistance, which preserves and exhibits the many items and documents on the struggles of several generations of Dominicans against what is often called Latin America’s bloodiest dictatorship, whose fierceness inspired the book by Mario Vargas Llosa and movie, “Fiesta del Chivo” (The Feast of the Goat).
