Santo Domingo.- The hemisphere’s first European city is also the Caribbean’s top tourism destination and the 8th most visited city in Latin America, says World MasterCard’s second yearly Global Tourism Destination Index.

The report forecasts growth by as many 16.6 million international travelers visiting the main cities of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2012.

Mexico City tops the Index followed by Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lima, Bogota, San Jose, Santo Domingo, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, and Quito.

Meanwhile Buenos Aires leads among the 10 major destination cities in Latin America in money spent by international visitors, followed by Argentina, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Lima, Bogota, San Jose, Rio de Janeiro, Santo Domingo, Caracas and Quito.

"It’s important to understand the role Latin American cities play in global trade and how electronic payments allow international travelers to make payments in a safe, simple and smart manner anywhere in the world," said MasterCard Latin America and Caribbean president Richard Hartzell, quoted by hoy.com.do.

"This index indicates that the region is attracting more international travelers and we want to continue to help facilitate the growth of trade without cash."

why did i know that the imbecile would be the first one to respond? i really should not answer him, since he is beneath debate, but the article does not say in what respect it is the best. so, Attabutt, can you tell me if it is the number 1 in terms of

1...footfall, or headcount?

2..return percentage?

3..number of days spent by each visitor?

4...number of dollars spent by each visitor?

5...linkages?

6..leakages?

7...effect on the environment?

8...effect on the economy?

9..effect on local employment?

what exactly does NUMBER 1 mean, Atabey?

I for one do not believe these figures which I believe are simply the numbers of people who have a foreign address and use their mastercard in the capital ,,..maybe some people who spend an hour or two from their cruise ship and a few others who come into SD from a holiday in Boca Chica or Juan Dolio but DEFINITELY not a tourist destination , just an add on

What is sad is that Santo Domingo, for being the FIRST on several facts, has a lot of Historical events to show, has BY FAR a lot more to offer than most of capital cities, the possibilities of the City as such are almost Limitless yet the Malecon is not even secured or walkable!!

Looks like people hate to see some better news. Well, you can write what ever you want, fact is Santo Domingo is top destination. Have no idea why some of you are negative about everything. If you hate the D.R. that much, stop reading the news and go on with your life where ever you live. There is nothing what could be good (on the news) what ever is written, some of you just don't like it. So stay in Nueva York or where ever, and look after your self, best you can do, and most likely better for you anyway, because cleaning your own back yard will keep you very busy.

Airgordo,

The Metro while highly charged with different views as to its utility will, mark my words, be crucial in the long run solution to the traffic problems of the capital. Santo Domingo will likely add another million or more people by the end of the next decade. So investments in transportation, while many other needs still remain to be solved, is nevertheless needed and a prudent use of government investments.

There is not the slightest doubt that the Zona Colonial , el Malecon and the area called Sans Souci have enormous tourist potential but in fact , despite promises after promises nothing is ever done.. Just imagine el conde with beautiful shady trees all down the centre and coffee shops and speciality stores or imagine Ave mella as a walking street with treesin the centre and all the intereting tourist shops ...then the area between would take off , But I wanted to plant four trees in my street in ZC and even offered to put them in big pots but I was told I was not permitted

Santo Domingo... I've been there once and would never return again.. One of the most disorganized cities that I have visited around the world... Where else could people be shot and killed in the middle of the day in supposely one of the best Malls in the city!! The traffic was on par with Mexico City.... basically you make things up as you drive... there was really nothing to see or do unless you want to see colonial zone.... I've seen enough old cities in different countries.....there was on sense of security..... when an ambassador from another country is murder then you know that you in a bad place......If I wanted to die, be assaulted, robbed or sit in traffic for hours then i would cherish a place like Santo Domingo.......

The Malecon is a nice place if you like broken bottles, plastic bag and poly food containers, with not a rubbish bin is sight and the lingering stench of pee, all the broken railings, honking cars spewing smoke, making it a very nice romantic walk in the evening as the sun goes down.... Just only carry a few dollars for the guys that will mug you...

It could be so nice.. This area has most of the big hotels but if you stay there they advise you not to walk along it, even during the day...So how long do we have to keep waiting... How much longer before these "people" realize it's a great place going further down the crapper...

Nothing will change unless people speak up and keep pointing to the problems.. Nothing will ever be prefect but that shouldn't stop us trying......

Good posting. I like your suggestion about planting trees and turning most of ZC into a pedestrian mall. The area has a lot of potential for attracting many tourists. Banning motorized vehicles and building a mini trolley and/or having horse-drawn carriages can give it the look and feel of the 1800's.

But the area needs to get cleaner and more old structures must be renovated. $50million for the fixing up and another $50 for the trolley, should do it.

Your suggestions are much better than mine!...Pedicabs, aka, rickshaws, can be and attractive, fun and an unusual ride for those that have not experienced it...(I haven't).

The whole ZC area would seem much more welcoming, carefree, and clean without the eyesore power lines.

Santo Domingo needs a bus system to augment the METRO. I took the metro to see what is was like compared to The MTA(NYC Transit) while clean with police in every car, bus service as a transfer would help the system. I only counted 2 green buses while I was in SD and it looked like the 2 train during rush hour....packed to he door.
I was able to find about 40 taxis that would not pass inspection anyplace in the world, using propane gas. Mocotran y tú was the label on my cab. As a tourist I would rather use public transportation than the unsafe cabs.

What better opportunity than now to run all O/H to U/G as it is in NY?.The electric wires that is.

They have the Metro's cat-walk to run the H/T cables underneath them. The duct could be built

by adding pre fabricated 5' concrete pcs and join together as it is done by con ED & NYC subways

The transformers could be installed at each end of passanger station unexposed in the tunnels.

This again it is ill-advice by the city councils as well as by the construction company or over

looked it that only plans for the present . M/Hs (men-holes) could be built every 250 ft along the

train runway to be able to splice the respective cables when they fail. This is done by building

vertical vaults with a 2 meters

radius deph away from the cat-walk to enable the workers to perform their duty without interfering

with the train traffic. At the same time not to leave any M/H covers exposed to the street for thieves.
