Santo Domingo.- The Tourism Ministry and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) presented Thursday a US$30.0 million development program for the Colonial Zone, aimed at conserving the historic center of the new world’s first European city and re-launch Santo Domingo as one of Latin America’s and the Caribbean’s top tourist destinations.
US$22.7 million of the program will improve streets, plazas an other public spaces, underground power lines and surveillance as well as restore the Zone’s attractions including the Fortaleza Ozama, Las Casas Reales, La Atarazana, the Alcazar de Colon, the Ruinas de San Francisco and redesign and implement theme tourism routes.
Moreover US$3.6 million would be allocated for a local integration plan for tourism development, including the training of human resources.

It is good news they are going to revitalize the area, it needs it. My fear is this is another debt the country is assuming, having no chance of ever paying it off.

Some good news....
"redesign and implement theme tourism routes." Is this just a way of saying, "we will only clean up and fix the streets the buses drive down"???
The only other thing I would like to see in this is accountability for how, who and where this money is spent, with open and transparent contract tenders..
I know , I know .... but G, Ric , J and I have a dream....
Ric your from the Zone right? Your thoughts???

Thank you ,,it is not nearly enough money but my first priority here is to use this money to put some of the power lines underground .
I would also try to work with an investor so the investor could retain the facade of one of the derelect old buildings and make a car park inside ..at present the main car park in calle jose reyes is full, more than 6 levels, nearly every evening .
I doubt if everything can be done at once but I would not be concentrating all the effort in the area around plaza espana .
The ruins of San Francisco would be a great project to improve and number one would be to install a small irrigation system.
I have a very strong feelig that once things a made more attractive private enterprise will come in very quickly with coffee bars and small cafes ..In the past week I have noticed that Pacos and the cafes opposite the cathedral have been full as people eat outside .

The colonial zone has a big problem with the rodents, that inhabit the sewers and this should be dealt with swiftly.
Placing the power lines underground would be the most urgent project, as well as building a new vertical parking area, like in old San Juan.
I hope that the moneys will not be solely used for "historical reconstruction", as the more urgent needs above are an urgent priority.

Isn't this just another rehashing of the announcement made months ago of a US $30 million dollars???? Nothing has happened - at least we cannot see any work going on! If it 's new money - what happened to the other one? IF its the same money being announced again, then its BS.

I guess the chu chu colonial is proving to be a good idea!
If I'm not mistaken, this work has been underway for some time. I have friends that are employed in this effort.
The Colonial City is great now, but with a facelift, it could give Viejo San Juan some SERIOUS competition!

Excellent news! People have been expecting some TLC...

Josean, you could use a facelift also!

Good points Generoso, we have a unique gift in possessing the colonial zone, everything there, is a first in the new world, and we fail to use it as an attraction. Our colonial zone could rival any in the America's but our tourism investments are designed for beach goers, no interested in our history. Perhaps because we don't treat it well!

I think the rodent problem must be in the lower parts of Zona Colonial or the problem is fixed because I have seen no rodents or their droppings around and above Calle mercedes. There are several places for vertical parking but the most obvious are in the area around Calle A,Portes and on mercedes near the corner of Duarte .

There is already a Metro line planned that terminates in zona Colonial
From: United States, NJ
Of all the projects ,I think this one is the most interesting one . If all is done propperly added by a
municipal parking lot as you suggested a vertical one and the power lines under groung will give
it a real colonial looking.

go to Old San Juan to see what a historic colonial zone is supposed to look like SD is light years behind due to economics and ........Havana viejo will be the pearl of them all when they get rid of the commies and that includes Cartagena de los Indios
From: Dominican Republic
The government has to take the lead for turning the colonial zone into a world-class destination. Old San Juan is the way it is because the government offered incentives, tax breaks and fixed the infrastructure. The colonial zone has been given millions of dollars over the years and it is still in bad shape, in my opinion. A few buildings will be rehabbed, but the main problems will remain. Again, until the government steps up and understand what the colonial zone could really be.

Don't forget the USA money injection into PR ,so we can't compare since they are part of the USA.
This applies to their public Universities as well as research and developement. Above all more
money going towards their education in general compare to ours.

Havana vieja is certainly the jewel of them all. Wow! Nothing compares with it in the Caribbean.
