SANTO DOMINGO. - The start of Barahona-Santo Domingo flights with Air Century marks the South Region’s launch as Dominican Republic’s most varied tourism destination for local or foreign visitors who want to explore the wonders of its vast beaches, stunning landscapes and unrivalled cultural diversity.

The airline’s three weekly flights Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from Joaquin Balaguer International Airport, at La Isabela in Santo Domingo will reach Barahona’s Maria Montez terminal in just 30 minutes, with available connections to the airport at Punta Cana using AE JetStream 3100/3200 Turbo Prop for up to 19 passengers.

"The start of flights will have a major impact on tourism facilities, which will be able to increase their occupancy, sell more of their tours, and promote the sale of handicrafts and local cuisine. New entrepreneurs will also visit the Southwest, bringing fresh investment and growth for the tourism industry, agriculture and mining,” said Barahona Tourism and Production Cluster president Julio Brache.

For Cluster vice president Polibio Schiffino, "Barahona has an unique capacity to exploit niche markets such as ecotourism, adventure, health and agro-tourism, and for that Barahona has excellent accommodations and for world-class services which satisfy the needs of a segment of the public with a high-purchasing capacity."

this is great news, because this is how tourist destinations usually get their start. only thing is, the Cluster´s vice president has to go and make a mockery of everything, what with the hyperbolics about major impacts. dude, it is 3 flights per week. each holding what, maybe 20 people? it is not going to be Cozumel by August.

"unrivalled cultural diversity"
The Dominican Republic?
I think the computer translator made a boo boo
"unrivalled cultural desert" is the correct translation.

Methinks this is more for the well-to-do Dominicans with property and homes there than tourists. What tourist is going to fly into SDQ, transfer to la isabella and then fly to an area where there is no chance to even rent a vehicle unless on an ecotour? The SW is indeed beautiful and definitely worth seeing but this will do nothing for tourism IMO.

benforpeace, you have to allow people their rights to dream. if they believe that this area will be the next boomtown, let them.

Boomtown is the last thing they want....This article reminds me of General Custer telling his men to hurry or they would miss the Indians

absolutely, dreamkiller. funnily enough, the reason why some tourism destinations lose their popularity is because they get too popular, then the people with the real money stop going there. see POP. it is like Yogi Berra said about Jimmy´s Bar....¨NOBODY GOES THERE ANYMORE, BECAUSE IT IS TOO CROWDED¨.
