Santo Domingo.- Haiti’s Tourism Minister sees her country becoming the Caribbean’s next major tourist destination but needs to forge an alliance with neighboring Dominican Republic to learn from its vast experience

Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin Friday said president Michel Martelly’s Administration regards tourism a cornerstone of its development policy, "because of its potential as an unrivalled source of new jobs, foreign currency and overall progress for the country."

Speaking in the Caribbean Tourism Bourse (BTC) trade fair in Santo Domingo where Haiti is the guest of honor, the official said Port-au-Prince has laid the groundwork for a hospitality market which instils confidence on investors and provide results in the short, medium and long term, which will create jobs, wealth and progress for Haiti.

To address this great task, Balmir said Haiti has to forge an alliance with its neighbor that she calls “a mirror which we can see ourselves in."

She cited as an example her government’s planned investments to expand the airports at Les Cayes, Cape Haitien and Jacmel to receive direct international flights. “As written in our flag, union is strength, so by bridging the best of both countries, I'm sure we will have better opportunities to compete as a tourism destination in the Caribbean."

There is lot of opportunities for Haiti, even though Haiti has to reinvent herself and take a 180 degree turn around. That is, avoiding things that hurts herself, implementing good international policies.

Colombia has completely reinvented herself as a tourist destination within a decade. A few years back you couldnt pay people to go there. As far as international images go they can indeed be reinvented in a relatively short time. Haiti can do it.

Of course they can do it, they just have to do things differently from what they've done in the past, we will be here to help and wish them well, unlike some Haitians on this forum, they can't wait for the D.R. to go down and never back up.

GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAHA,
I'm sorry, but that'll never happen. I understand that if you're Haitian this may sound attractive, but no way in hell. I'm all for building a wall and keeping the two sides separated as it has always been. I wish all Haitians the best and i hope they can develop their tourism so that the economic situation may improve. Can you imagine the disaster that will be ; complete chaos!

It's time to make peace my people! I was born in Haiti but fortunate enough go live and become a Dominican Resident in the DR. I am great full for all my Dominicans friends who embraced me like one of the own and help me build one of the largest company in PP! So, let's work together instead of going back ages... Show me some love brothers.... By the way I am the Owner of Malibu rent- car in Puerto Plata and I have a house in Urbanizacion Atlantica behind the Brugal factory..... Good bless both nations.....

sergepamphile, the Haitians that have been embraced by the Dominican people are legion..my great grandfather raised a Haitian boy along with my grandfather and his siblings and even though I came on the scene after his demise it was always related to me that he was an integral part of the family even if he wasn't related by blood. Stories like that are repeated time and again across DR and throughout our history as a nation. But you won't hear such stories ad nauseam because it just doesn't suit the goals of certain individuals and groups.

Wishful thinking on behalf of the Haitian tourism minister. There can be no serious tourism unless there is minimum security guarantees in place. Nobody wants to get intimidated by beggars, mugged, assaulted, raped or killed in a lawless country. Granted that Haiti has many wonderful "could be" tourist destinations, including "L' Citadelle" which I have visited, and many beautiful beaches and high mountain resort areas such as Kenscoff, but unless security can be guaranteed from the airport on out, tourism will never arrive.

Maybe, if by 2026 we hosted the world cup in conjunction with Jamaica, Cuba and Puerto Rico....that could be a great start!

That would be something unfortunately it require around 7 to 10 stadiums and another 10 for training. the best hope would be the gold cup

part 2:

And I know of many who therefore left this beautiful country.
And guaranteed security from the airport on? Do you remember the warnings of the US embassy a couple of days ago?
I think what Haiti can learn fron the Dominican Republic are many things what they shouldn't do. Like all-inclusive tourism.
I'm very confident that

generoso: I'm a foreigner living in Dominican Republic since three years now. But I don't know of any other country where so many foreigner have been robbeds (nearly everybody who lives here some time - some even twice or three times - including myself) and even killed. I knew at least three foreigners personally who have beeen killed in the last two years! If you ask somebody in Europe, in Asia or elsewhere, I bet that there are not many who know somebody personally who was killed there. A friend of mine in Sosúa told me some time ago, that he was counting all the murdered foreigners he knew in the last 20 years - he said it was 24! So don't talk about security!!!
