BARAHONA, Dominican Republic. - Tourism is the future and hope of Barahona and other southwestern provinces  submerged in poverty, for which Danilo Medina’s Administration must dictate policy to materialize the region’s development.

Ruling PLD party senator Eddy M. Vasquez said tourism is needed to create jobs since the region has no other major sources of wealth. "There’s no solution to the lack of jobs here, the only way to reach the province’s and the region’s economic development is by exploiting the tourism potential which we have here."

The legislator said while the San Juan-Neiba-Barahona highway will be crucial for the exploitation of tourism in the region, the construction of a north-south cross mountain route would also spur the economy. "The Cibao-South highway is another project with which we Southerners dream about."

Vasquez said he suggested the road project to president-elect Danilo Medina, who in his view reacted positively to the proposal.

@ Dreamkiller.. I agree..

Tradicionally , no president has ever become concern about the south part of the island.. And some people say, it's a diamond on the rough, maybe over ignore, but for sure , one of the most impressive views ever in D.R.

Danilo have a job to do over there.. and I certainly think that he will..I am optimist andI think that he will create the conditions for the prosperity of the region..

A few more news stories like the recent ones about warning from the US gov't about the robberies of tourist leaving the airports or last night's horror, a bus hitting a train at the crossing outside of Higuey killing 3 and hurting 23 more, and we won't have to worry about "too many tourists".

If ever there was a country capable of shooting itself in the foot, or killing the goose that lays golden eggs it is us.

Absolutely, juanb
If the south-west remains undeveloped and with minimal access, it may be the last remaining area with some potential for eco-tourism. Where else are there pristine beaches, crocodiles and flamingos? First clean out the feral squatters and keep them out. Leave the all-inclusives where they are, but perhaps include some armored vehicles for shuttling visitors to and from the airport, and armored patrol boats to and from otherwise inaccessible eco-tourism sites.

How about fencing off the Samana Peninsula at the neck, with a strictly controlled gate, then re-locating all the peasants and feral squatters, cleaning up the rubbish for once and for all, then keeping it for foreign tourists and foreign residents?

Instead of roads roads roads...why not schools schools schools? The biggest issue facing the country is a lack of capable employees. With an education past grade 5, this place could really be proud, but until then...well....you know.

Have anybody seem jojosnotgood, josean and JuanB saying something positive?
I agree that they only spell negativism in the forum!

That's what we need in D.R. : people that do nothing, dont study, dont improve and give more bad influence to everyone..
