Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) sponsors the First annual Rubirosa Ambassador Polo Cup to be held on Sunday, June 10th at Casa de Campo, in La Romana province.

The event celebrates Dominican Republic's legendary roots in polo, honors Dominican Diplomat-playboy and legendary polo player, Porfirio Rubirosa, and promotes the lush island nation as a destination offering sophisticated resorts, luxury, celebrity and equestrian tourism.

"Dominican Republic is being rediscovered as an upscale destination by tourists, celebrities and filmmakers alike. Having a presence in the 2012 season of the Santa Barbara Polo Club and recognizing the international success of Dominican polo icon Porfirio Rubirosa will emphasize the equestrian lifestyle, polo players and variety of other luxury activities that Dominican Republic has to offer," said Magaly Toribio, Vice Minister of International Promotion, Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism.

Situated on the country's magnificent Southeast Coast along the Caribbean Sea, Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana is where Porfirio Rubirosa played polo and is the regional hot spot for this sport. Casa de Campo was also the site of the World Cup Semi-Final Polo Championships.

DR has been very slow to market its personalities. The 40s-50 Star actress of Arabian Nights, Maria Montez is another figure that has so far not been utilized to forge a marketing campaign.

Other nations find this old hat and use the names to project market benefits. Long dead Pirates are used to sell Rum and make lots of money for businesses. Why not the DR?

island full of trash and drug dealers with q hugh murder rate to go with it.

man the last thing they want is to give the young an education so they just might grow up to become decent humans.
not drug dealers and ladies of the night.
had a friend years ago we went into a giift shop in pop..
my friend wanted to import perfume from the states to the dr for resale.
the manger of the gift shop very proudly states, forget that business it will not work.
my friend asked him why? he said we dominicans shoplift lots of perfume from major dept stroes and bring it back to the dr for resale at lower then retail prices.
he had this hugh smile on his face when he spoke like he was very proud of this.

Rubirosa Cup. What a disgrace it is to honor a staunch Trujillista. If you why wonder our country is in the shape is in. Look no further than the mentality of most Dominicans

I imagine there will be a very small crowd looking but polo is like yachting ,,it requires a really large amount of labour and provides jobs to many who may otherwise be unemployed ,,I think that the horses have rather better personailities than the players in this game

Well, I am a great believer in capitalizing on the negative and turning anything "bad" into a positive. Why not take advantage of this more then life like, mythical Dominican figure and use it to our benefit.
