Punta Cana, DR.– Frontier Airlines today launched a new nonstop seasonal service between Denver (DEN) and Punta Cana (PUJ), taking the number of nonstop Frontier routes from Denver to a record 68, and increasing the airline's international destinations served from Denver to eight.

The service will operate Saturdays beginning today and continuing through August 4, 2012.

"With the launch of service to Punta Cana, Frontier will be the only carrier offering nonstop service from Denver to the Caribbean," said David Siegel, president and chief executive officer of Frontier.

Here is what the government should really be working on:

Punta Cana Airport currently receives 4,000,000 visitor arrivals per year. The US market is pretty much maxed out. The South American market, however, is virtually untouched. Why? This is because there are almost no direct flights to PUJ from South America. They all go through Panama, Caracas, Miami or other transfer points and most of them involve layovers of 2-5 hours. Not a very enticing way to start or finish a vacation trip, all that travel. Why not have the government work to incentivize the Soutn American and US airlines to fly non stop direct flights from the major population centers of Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela and all the other well populated cities. Let them start with one or two round trips weekly and watch the business grow. We could easily add a million visitors per year..

@ Juanb, all you said is good, except the notion that the US market is maxed out. We don't even have non stop flights from Texas (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, etc), California (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, etc),just to name a few, we don't have any direct flights from any US city west of the Mississippi, except for maybe a few charters here and there, more than half the US population don't have access to a direct flight to DR, in other words we are far from maxing out the US market, btw US tourist to DR have been on the rise for quite some time.

In a different note, now Denver is nothing for some, but I can only imagine the comments of the traditional DR haters if the article said "Frontier Airlines reduces flights to Punta Cana".

Quite alright, matey. Not to worry. Thems plenty of black skins left over for sharp-shooting practice, eh?

Ron, perhaps shooting "blacks" (Haitians) would be more appealing to Dominicans (not so black) than Americans?

Becasue is CHEAPER for them than go to Salvador Bahia or Recife...that is a very simple answer and is the same answer that applies to why would a Brazilian go to Punta del este or Argentina...

airgordo,
It is not expensive to stay in Salvador or most other places (you don't need to stay in a walled all-include to be safe) and travel almost anywhere by coach is cheep, safe, and you can sleep more comfortably than on a plane flight. Also there is far more to see and do.

DR requires visas from much of south america. DR prefers the white shoe boys from the United States of America. Maybe the new governor of DR can change this but I doubt it as he reports to washington

WRONG, DR does NOT requires visas to almost ANYONE on the world!! THIS is one of the most EASY TO GET IN countries on the world, they don't ask ANYTHING when you get in! Actually just COLOMBIA requires visa on south america, which is EXEMPT if you have USA visa already and there is a lot of countries such as Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador that don't even require the US10 for Tourist card becasue there is an agreement between goverments, so Please let's speak CORRECT data here.

That might work for the Backpack tourist, but the reality is that Brazilians buy all inclusive bundles includding the air ticket... time and time i have checked the prices of these bundles on various travel agencies on Sao Paulo, Brasilia and going of to one of those places many times is even more expensive than going off the country, specially because our winter is their summer.

airgordo,
I stayed at an all-inclusive in Porto Seguro which included air fare from Sao Paulo and it was very reasonable price, however the mosquitoes were terrible. Winter and summer don't really have the same meaning in the Dominican Republic or northern Brazil, as in non-tropical climates.

Because many of those Latin Countries already have beaches(Some better) and resorts. Why would a Colombian of Brazilian want to go to the D.R?

On the weather is True what you say but on the tourist season the Prices variate a lot, DR on boreal winter is more expensive than in summer, and our summer is their winter, where everybody on Brasil takes the vacation to brasil's north east.
