Santo Domingo.- The government will revamp the Colonial Zone to make it one of Dominican Republic’s top tourist attractions, with a RD$200.0 million (around US$5.0 million) allocation for next year and US$30.0 million funding during five years from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia made the announcement after a National Palace meeting with President Danilo Medina, who according to the official, expressed his commitment by all Government agencies for the actions neededin the colonial zone to make it more attractive for tourists.

The official said the president specified the work each agency will do in the Colonial Zone, among them Indotel, the power utility CDEEE, Tourism, and Environment ministries, City Hall, among other s.

Garcia said the actions in the colonial city look to receive a large numver of tourists in the coming months, starting from the east region, resulting from the recently opened Coral Highway.

He reported that the private sector requested an injection of RD $ 200 million pesos and the President immediately ordered it in next year's budget.

He said security, cleanup and underground cabling are some of the efforts, noting that the capital is becoming one of the large shopping cities, for which plazas are being built with some of the world's leading brands.

Colonial Zone tourism business leaders also took part in the meeting, where Garcia unveiled the project called "Ovando City," in honor of the New World’s first European developer, Nicolas de Ovando.

"All buildings should Have painting requirements on penalty of fine......after 4 years"

You mean paint over the historical sandstone brick buildings? Paint will not fix the buildings that are falling down... Give the owners 6 months to fix, sell it, it or lose it....

I do visit it, I was there last weekend.. when was the last time you did?

But still.... how will paint fix the broken buildings? the mess of power lines, garbage, crime or bring in more tourists?
Or is it that a coat of paint will make it look nice, while the building is falling down from the inside...

Cleaner streets, freshly painted buildings and most importantly , to quote a DT poster, "stop treating tourists like prey". Or simply try to emulate San Juan's ,Viejo San Juan.

Make the entire colonial zone east of Independence Park one by pedestrian area, clean the streets every morning, have monthly festivals with police patrol, bring tourists from the resorts, and enforce the owners to fix their properties or otherwise get out (initially the gov should give the owners an incentive).

Having visited the CZ recently I can understand the need to fix the place up. I question the need for paint on the historic buildings, that is certainly not needed. What is needed is the removal of some ads glued to the walls advertizing computer repair and such, the trash, the graffiti in some buildings. I will tell you that the Calle El Conde is shamefully very dirty. It looks more like an alley than a street with its broken bricks, dirty-unpainted walls, and trash thrown about in some areas. Calle El Conde Is in bad shape for the publicity that it gets urging people to visit the area. The facade of most (crappy) businesses are in need of repair and upgrade. Like most things in the Dominican Republic it does not live up to the hype and propaganda. And the parking? At night? OMG!!! Talk about Nightmare on Zona Colonial.

As someone who has lived in the colonial zone for years, this is the same bull&@*t that they talk about every year. And then things stay the same. You can paint everything, put the cables underground, but if there is still 40% of the businesses on El Conde shuttered, what does it help. There needs to be serious help, and the government has to take the lead. One thing would be to get the lights fixed. At night some of the streets are dark as hell.

1-Repair broken walls, doors , remove graffiti and signs for local home businesses, pick up trash? yes, paint over the sand stone historic building? No.
2-Install or plant flowering tree at the Gran Plaza, is too drabby. needs more color.
3-Demand business owner fix dilapidated signs and paint walls on Calle El Conde.
4-Street lights are fixed but delinquents throw stones and break them so they can hide from cops and commit arm robbery.
5-And a very important one, there's a political element present in the Dominican Republic that tries to hinder the progress of the DR itself. they are, in my opinion; responsible for many of the daily problems there. These people are committing sabotage against society in order to create the same discontent and anger towards the government that is expressed in forums like this.
