Santo Domingo.- In the first eight months 3.2 million tourists came to the country, a growth of 7.25%, and 220,526 more than the same period last year.
The figures from the Central Bank’s January-August tourist flow report says the growth stems from increases in non-resident foreigners (7.28%) and Dominicans 7.08%.
It said the joint efforts by the Tourism Ministry and the private sector led to tourism’s jump from January to August, through promotions and agreements with tour operators, travel agencies, airlines and participation in major international tourism fairs.
The Central Bank said in the first eight months total passenger arrivals in the country by air, including residents and non-residents grew 6.91% compared with the same period last year.
It adds that 3.5 million travelers entered through the various airports during that period, an increase of 231,756 passengers, compared with the same 2011period.

This is great!..Now imagine how many more would come if only we had cleaner cities, tighter security, and fewer slums!?
Santo Domingo, and the rest of the country, can be cleaned up, better patrolled by the Politur, and decent housing built for the poor.
We can use the extra income from more visitors to fund all these needed and essential projects to help make us the premier destination in the Caribbean!

Just imagine how many more would have come from South America if only there were nonstop direct flights from major cities.

The number of arrivals gives no indication of anything without saying how long they stay or how much they spend.

Who cares, Roy! They come, they stay, they spend. The specifics don't matter at all! What's important is the number of visitors. They will invariably spend, even if it's just a few dollars, which is a few dollars more we didn't have before they got there. Crikey.!

Sorry, Ron, I don't have direct personal experience. You could ask a Dominican politician, it is "traditional" I read here.

Great news. I also agree with RonEvane's commend. One way to increase tourism, is advertising or posting deals on websites such as Groupon.com, LivingSocial.com, yipit.com, and others.

The problem is not lack of promotion, but lack of product.
