Santo Domingo.- At a cost of around RD$70.0 million per year the company Sans Souci Ports continues the Ozama River’s cleanup, dredging the Santo Domingo Port access channel and docks with the company Codralux, to haul away as much as 150,000 cubic meters of sediment and trash within15 days.

Codralux dredging executive Amaury Romero said 60% of the river’s waste are sediments from mudslides, household waste, industrial chemicals, feces and from illegal construction; 30% is plastic, while the remaining 10% is runoff debris, industries and people who dump trash directly to the Ozama and Isabela rivers.

Leading edge technology

Romero, quoted by listin.com.do, said Codralux uses high-tech equipment including a self-propelled vessel which suctions sediment which is stored in a hopper, and then transported to areas approved by the Environment Ministry and the Navy.

Plastic bags and other plastic derivatives for which there are alternatives should be banned!

Plastic like glass bottles should require a deposit that would be returned when they are brought back to the place of purchase for recyclying!

File that one under:

1. If someone would teach the People Not to Litter. This would be a good start at reducing the mess.

2. Start recycling programs (just like they do with iron and beer bottles) for paper, plastic bottles, styrofoam, ect.

3. Charge RD 1.00 Peso DEPOSIT on anything from stryofoam to plastic water bottles.

3. FINE ANYBODY CAUGHT LITTERING?

Only one problem styrofoam can't be recycled.. and that is why it needs to be band out right, but the rest of what you put is good

I did a detailed study including many photos, and put a number of proposals (including bounties and bans) in a written report to the Vice Minister of the Environment in her office. She seemed very interested but none of the proposals became Bills before Congress.

.... and where do you think the "150,000 cubic meters of sediment and trash within15 days" is dumped?
