Santo Domingo.- The National District City Council and the Culture and Tourism ministries announced joint action to identify areas and buildings to be restored in and around the Colonial Zone.

Santo Domingo mayor Roberto Salcedo and Culture minister José Antonio Rodríguez yesterday cited the important points which need to be recovered in the historic center, and become part of the National District Tourist Route.

Rodriguez said it’s the first of several meetings to stress the link between Culture and the city’s government.

Salcedo said they work to coordinate the historic route, with the Colonial Zone at  its center, because in his view, it’s the gateway to the flow of tourists the city expects in the coming years.

The Colonial zone of every country in Latin America are mines of vast untapped potential. DR has the potential to use its cache of Ciudad primada. That can bring in thousands of tourists who will be fascinated to know of our history during the colonial period and beyond

Especially helpful are well trained and courteous tour guides who go out of their way to prevent ripp offs by shady merchants selling extremely high quality handicrafts
