Santo Domingo.- When American Airlines’ announced cuts of direct flights between Santo Domingo, Santiago and New York take effect in April, only two airlines will ply that direct route to the biggest U.S. city.

A third carrier, United Airlines, flies daily to nearby Newark, New Jersey, also home to many Dominican immigrants. The others are and JetBlue and Delta.

Tourism Ministry PR Napoleon de la Cruz said the government regrets American Airlines’ announcement, because of the close relationship established with Dominicans during its nearly 40 years in the country.

Nonetheless the official noted that the decision won’t affect the flow of tourists to the country, which grew 6.6% last year.

Spin doctors will have a tough time down playing this even though they are flying out of Miami.

Seriously big hassle compared to direct flight.

I don't understand this, why would AA stop flying direct to DR?? I usually travel AA when i visit the island, I really like their terminal at JFK and even tho the planes are crappy their service is not so bad. Last i checked santo domingo and santiago are really busy routes from NYC, Boston and Miami. There are options available with JetBlue which has a couple of direct flights daily and Delta, but more competition is needed. AA will comeback sooner than later... Maybe is time for DR to finally start again with a national airline.

No need for any spin...the fact is that is that AA has been on the skids for some years and they still do noy understand what all latinosand all other passengers from latin countries hate about them and that is that they must first land in Miami and be treated by immigration as scum , have to normally wait hours for the luggage and then a longer time to go through customs...and all this having had to walk for kilometres from the plane gate

Because AA did not give enough under-table money to DR's official, and DR is collecting too much air ticket taxes.
