Santo Domingo.- Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia on Tuesday said more than 4.6 million visitors came to the country in 2012, and predicted continued growth for 2013.
He said the country is on the path to reach president Danilo Medina’s proposed goal of 10 million tourists for the next 10 years.
Garcia said tourism grew 6.6 percent, beating forecasts for the country and the region and much of the world, despite the global crisis.
He said Dominican Republic’s tourism growth paced the world’s 4% and the Caribbean’s 4.8%. "With this growth, more than two percentage points higher than the global and the Caribbean tourism, we again demonstrated the great year we achieved in the Dominican Republic."
The official said the more than 4.6 million tourists hold the projected goal of 10 million by 2022 on track.
Garcia said the country has the highest growth in the Caribbean for the second straight year to become the regional leader, a position he affirms will continue in the coming years with the government’s joint plans with the private sector.

Here in the north are only arriving the invisible tourists. Wherever you go - nothing, I mean for the high season. Last week I was in Las Terrenas where you can enjoy completely empty beaches and plenty of free restaurant seats. Sosúa at New Year's Eve - a ghost town until midnight. After midnight there was some movement, but nothing to compare with former years. In Boca Chica last week - the same thing: lonely evenings at the Duarte (relatively - compared to other years). The only thing that at least SEEMS to work is Punta Cana. But that's not the real Dominican Republic.

TO ALL - It is sad to see some of the comments here in this forum it looks as if too many of you don’t understand too much about marketing. Take any movie star – most of them are “nobody” until a good agent takes them and markets them to the public by making them “look good” to potential clients (the fans). If they do their job well the paparazzi and the world press jump on board and help to make them famous and eventually rich! This is exactly what is happening in the DR right now and it seems to be working. It will be a slow process that will even be further slowed down by any NEGATIVE comments – like most of them on here! Lately I've seen great news: 4 % for education, a second line for the metro, we are leaders of tourism in the Caribbean ( la tierra de papa dios, etc ), more exportations,new highways ( cibao -sur and autopista del Coral), more teachers, new malls and avenues,low inflation, more foreign investment, etc, etc..
That's what I call progress...!
But some people are very proud of only showing their miseries...
Those PPH's can keep crying and sobbing!
We are so done with their pessimism in this forum..! They only wish bad things for the general people..

No one wants to go to the north coast, they're all going to Punta Cana or Samana peninsula. The north coast needs to be rebuilt, reinvigorated and reintroduced. After Punta Cana, in a year or two these tourist will want to see other parts of the country, we need to take advantage of that.
Btw, most of these anti-dominicans are not Dominicans themselves or live in our country. They're just here because DT is one of the few non-moderated sites on the web.
Joseano: I think you need to get out there and find some love in life. Even if it's from the other patients at your psych ward, give them a chance. This would help you with your depression, negativity and hopelessness.

I just came from Santa Barbara de Samana taking advantage the Norwegian ship was departing
from NYC saved me the flight to Fl..
On both sides of the HW all I saw was schacks and pooverty.No farms in sight at all. The town in general after the hurracane, there were water puddles flooding inland atracting mosquitos, and filthy.Aside of whale watching there is nothiong wothwile sceen in Samana aside of the pre-Hispanic Musem.
If this is what progress is? then by far Pto Pta is more progressive than Samana.
As to why big ships don't come to Pto Pta the answer lies in the gvt permits to dock there, Had the toutism department put some emphasis on the North Coast, it would had been a diferent
story today, starting with its sewer system at Pto Pta
