Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry received US$140,000 from the company power EGE-Haina on Thursday to decontaminate the tanker ship Konstantinos, which ran aground and abandoned more than 10 years near Beata Island, Pedernales province (southwest).

Upon receiving the funds from EGE-Haina general manager Marcelo Aicardi, Environment minister Bautista Rojas said the money will be used to cover the entire cost of removing the vessel, after the purge of its bilge, and the extraction, transport and disposal of the waste. “This will prevent environmental damage to the marine life of Beata and Alto Velo islands.”

Beata Island, part of the Jaragua National Park, is the country’s second biggest, after Saona, La Romana province (southeast).
