Santo Domingo.- The Tourism Ministry’s Colonial Zone Development Program will start to renovate the historic center in April, with work on Meriño and Isabella streets.

Program director Maribel Villalona presented the plan’s first stage, designed by architects and engineers, with experience in the development of urban centers in Europe and North America, who submitted the winning tenders, supervised by the Inter-American Development Bank.

"We’re planning to start in April at the request of minister Francisco Javier Garcia, for which we began working with the Inter American Development Bank preparing all documents for the call for tenders, in a way which allows us to proceed as scheduled," she said.

Villalona added the work will be done by blocks to allow the area’s activities to continue with minimal disruption, with the first stage expected to be completed no later than nine months.

Radical change

The plan’s first stage is expected to radically transformation the Colonial Zone, with underground wiring, repaved streets, less traffic, priority for pedestrians and the reconstruction of facades of monuments.

on reflection I think it is a good idea to start on calle Arzobispo Merino and calle Isobel la Catolica although I can see no reason not to spell the names correctly .Both streets which are the links to SD Este and to the East of DR are full of interesting buildings but recently have had large road works which have not been well finished ,, I just hope the new works go up to Ave Mella and not just in the bottom section of ZC

Halleluiah! Finally!
This, a few of us have been praying for, for years! This article, --DT, as usual, leaves us wondering-- doesn’t say how much it’ll cost. But whatever it is, it is well-worth the millions invested!
This will be a moneymaker for everyone involved. Including, but not limited to: the Tourist Board, restaurants, retailers, and all kinds of additional businesses, etc.

The money devoted, will be recouped in short order. The increased tourist traffic will generate big bucks in tariffs for our govt, which can then re-invest it in other gentrification projects in SD, and other cities.

Medina, being an economist and with obvious business savvy, will continue to re-invent our banana republic to turn it into the huge fun destination, that it has the potential for.
Along with the newly constructed Coral Highway, this project, when finished, will attract many from Punta Cana. The added business will also attract major international retailers, such as Gucci, etc.

The momentum created, will sustain itself… Remember: “an object in motion, tends to stay in motion”.
Slowly but surely, our president is getting our economic ball, rolling!

Prayers to our Lady of High Grace, have been answered!

I was walking around Zona Colonial looking for a small sculpture and was delighted to see that many private residents have recently painted the exterior of buildings and it is a great improvement . The part of el conde beteen calle isobel la catolica and calles las damas has trees in the centre and is apopular place to eat outside and moving west , the area in front of parque Colon is attractive but from then on something has to be done woth Conde,,,I still think the easiest and best thing is to simply place large shade trees in the middle with benches to sit on ,,,and I am sure the shops would reopen and there would be many new cafes....the wall of the car park on Conde and Jose Reyes has been covered with green mossy type plants and looks fantastic

RonEvane,

All new private investment projects are a result of Leonel's "If you build it they will come" strategy for Quisqueya. Of course, the benefits will not materialize right away, but more like in a long and in steady term, a.k.a, "progress".

Ron,
This Machiavelli, purple pundit is an active (paid) spoke person of the PLD in PA. He has some financial “under the table” investments around PC-Bavaro, thanks to LF.

Totally agree, Sir!

The entire CZ, made into a park-like walking mall, free of vehicular traffic, lends itself to be a very attractive and pleasant place to be.
I can picture myself, along with my genius brother, sitting al fresco, watching the girls go by whilst quaffing a few Presidentes!!
Oh, God! I can't wait to resettle there and enjoy my old age!! We should meet someday, Ricardolito, I think we may have lots to enjoy talking about!!

Well I am in the DR nearly every day ,,and as I live in ZC I have a great interest in the area and see daily the various things that are happening ,,The other thing is that I have spent some times in Calelaria in Bogota which is the same era but much more beautifully maintained and with great vibrance and safety due to several universities being there and car parking on the sides of most roads being banned
