Santo Domingo.- 'Latino Baseball Town', to be built at a cost of more than US$50 million, will boast a modern stadium to Major League Baseball standards, the New York Yankees announced  in La Romana (east) on  Monday.

In a press conference in the National Palace, Yankees vice president Felix Lopez and Latino Baseball Hall of Fame founder and president Robert Weil said the stadium will be the project’s first phase, be called "Latin Center Stadium," in Benerito, La Altagracia province, around 20 kilometers east of La Romana.

They said the privately funded project will be developed under the concept of financial engineering, which takes into account the protection of the environment and the use renewable energy. It also ensure transparency on the investments.

"This project would be a major boost to president Danilo Medina’s efforts to promote tourism and will have a major global impact," Lopez said. "The goal is to try to have a stadium with the qualities the majors demand, with certain rules that were going to meet, where the stadium will be a jewel in the Americas."

For Weil, the project is based on Dominican Republic’s credibility as the region’s baseball leader, noting that the entire project’s cost of US$120 million will include several sports and tourism areas.

Also present in the press conference were Yankees executives Joel Lithgow, of the Bronx Bombers’ local academy; Stan Maradith, president of DLR Group, and Emmanuel Garcia, head of the club’s Latino affairs, among others.

"We're taking on a project, with which we tell president Danilo Medina that since his goal is to bring 10 million tourists, we have a platform that is baseball, and we encourage those tourists to come here, so that's the intention of this group," Weil said.

Dready,

"Field of Dreams:" If you build it, they will come"

There a baseball fanatics all over the world (**hence global impact) Dominican players have a mystique and a passion for the sport. The fanatics will spare no dime to be able to observe the seeds of next generation MLB players in the rough. so to say. They will come for the experience.

The Yankee name is a magnet and money maker.

**I doubt it will be major

The new home for Los Toros?
Bus loads of the all inclusive folks from Bavaro and Bayahibe to watch a game?
Mr. Weil is a Casa de Campo guy with great baseball connections. That is not his picture shown here.
There must be a Costasur or Central Romana presence also.

who do you think is a bigger name on the sports world; Usain Bolt, or Alex Rodriguez?

why are there not planeloads of people going to Jamaica to watch the mystique of Jamaican athletes running sprint events?

"why are there not planeloads of people going to Jamaica to watch the mystique of Jamaican athletes running sprint events?" You know Dready I cannot answer that one. ¿ Poor marketing ? But, then one does not fill track & field stadiums with fans every day as do the baseball stadiums.

The Yankees do not throw money into a black hole. This $120m investment would not have been made if the Yankees did not think they would gain from it. There are minds greater than ours who have crunched the numbers and given the thumbs up for the project. So, let's enjoy the thought of going to a tropical evening ballgame in the future.

not poor marketing. Jamaica is a country with serious marketing skills. the issue is that nobody cares. which person in the USA and Canada is going to go to a baseball game while they are on vacation? maybe if the stadium is next door. is anyone going to leave from Punta Cana to go to a local game in this stadium? of course not. a gringo who lives in the DR will go to a game, because, over time, he will probably get attached to a team, and will root for them. Americans and Canadians, who do not know who the teams are, and who plays for them, will not care one bit. they have stadiums with minor league games where they come from.

Even Die Hard Baseball fans will think about it twice!

how many of those games could you play in a year/ you do not build a stadium to play one game. have you seen what has happened to all the facilities that were built for the Games here?

Dready,

I know it's pretty difficult for you and your buddy Josean to think ANYTHING positive could come from PRIVATE INVESTMENTS risking millions of dollars in a new stadium and other facilities in the Dominican Republic. Sadly for you two nay-Sayers money talks and bullsh*t walks. If this VERY SUCCESSFUL Baseball organization, perhaps you two have heard of them: The Yankees, believe it's worth their Time and MONEY to invest in the Dominican Republic, their opinion and MONEY trumps anything you two Dominican nay-sayers could possibly come up with against the deal.

As for why your Jamaica isn't enticing millions of dollars in foreign investments in Track and Field. Have you ever been to a training session? What possible excitement would paying customers get to pay for? A bunch of stretching, brief sprinting exercises and superficial horsing around?

Get serious!

Now if they supplied some "Yams" to paying customers, you might interest some big money to invest.LOL

That's why it will be either the new home of Los Toros or a new team for the Winter League.
Amazing concept but crazy to imagine.

As a diehard Toros fan who loves Michelli Stadium, I hope they don't move this team.

Maybe they can build a 20 million dollar school as well.

Atabey, there is a MAJOR difference between us. it is called SCHOOL. i have a diploma from the World Bank Institute, that says that i qualify to assess the feasibility and viability of investment projects. it says that i have been trained to analyse inputs, to decide whether or not a project can become viable. that skill does not come from copying and pasting articles. you have to study for it, and acquire the conceptual tools.

there is no venture that i have seen in the last 5 years that i have guessed wrong on. i said, from day one, that the Metro could never make money, and that it would never achieve the projected ridership numbers. i am right on both counts. i said Air Dominican would not work. it went bankrupt withoput flying a passenger. i have predicted, within weeks, the possible lifespans of restaurants, clubs, call centers, you name it. guys have ignored my advice, and lost fortunes. numerous clubs that i gave 6 months died within 4.

this is not a topic for you to argue with me. you do not have the tools, the training, nor the understanding. now run away, and go post another article on Jamaica in the forum.

Don't know if your health and/or luck will see you through the next 20-25 years, but if you get there you're likely seek atonement for your past/current negativity and DR bashing.

Being a good critic implies more than voicing negativity ad nauseam. Constructive criticism is definitely not your cup of tea.

"Yankees unaware of chief international officer's announcement of $50 million stadium in Dominican Republic"

"MINNEAPOLIS — Felix Lopez is up to his old tricks again.

Lopez, the Yankees’ executive vice president and chief international officer, took part in a press conference in the Dominican Republic on Monday to help make an announcement about a new privately funded $50 million baseball stadium outside of La Romana.

There was only one problem: the Yankees didn’t know anything about the project."
