Santo Domingo.- Construction for the cross-mountain highway (Cibao-Sur) will start no later than August, as president Danilo Medina promised when he visited southwestern San Juan de Maguana province last year.
The road’s first stage spans Sabaneta to Boca de los Arroyos in San Juan province, and Moncion, Santiago Rodríguez province.
Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo said the funds for the work are already in the budget, and revealed that soil studies in the Central Mountain Range confirm the road’s technical feasibility
He rejected criticism that the work would harm the Range’s vast ecological wealth and noted that it doesn’t include tunnels beneath the mountains.
The official said contrary to what’s believed, the area is totally deforested, but construction includes reforestation aimed at developing tourism. "We have to live with the environment, but there should be access to protect it."
Quoted by listin.com.do, Castillo also revealed that a study will be made on the number of vehicles expected to use the Cibao-Sur road.
