Tourism shows advances in Colonial Zone redo

Santo Domingo.-The Tourism Ministry on Wednesday showed advances in the Colonial City’s Tourism Development Program, with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and aims to showcase the historic center’s attractions and raise the quality of life of residents, with restored cultural assets, revamped infrastructure and spurring new investment in the area.

The Program Coordination Unit (PCU) conducted a census of Colonial Zone businesses to create basic database properly manage activities and projects to develop new business and encourage economic projects, as part of the Program’s actions.

Among the preliminary data obtained from the study, PCU said 320 new businesses opened after the start of reconstruction.

In a press conference the entity said it contracted architect Rafael Moneo, director of Moneo-Brock in Madrid, to start a project in the Ruins of San Francisco, which includes the creation of an events center and an archaeological park.

Moneo is internationally recognized as the guru of modern interventions in historical assets, and winner of several prestigious awards. “ensuring the professional quality that will be in charge of this important work, in addition to value these assets, boost the economy of the north Colonial City which is currently far behind.”
