Pawa Dominicana launches 1st flight; 25-year lull ends

Santo Domingo.- Dominicanairline Pawa on Monday held its inaugural flight with a ceremony at LasAmericas Airport with the arrival of flight 721from St. Martin.

Pawa becomes thefirst Dominican based airline since the late 1980s, when Dominicana de Aviacionwent bankrupt.

The airline hasdirect flights to Aruba, Curacao and St. Martin, then add new routes such as SanJuan, Havana, Miami and New York within six months.

Pawa president SimonGarcia thanked the Civil Aviation Institute and the Industry and Commerce Ministryfor the facilities provided.

He said the carrierwill start begin 24 flights weekly andexpand operations in the Caribbean, with routes not covered by other airlines thusfar.

Cardinal Nicolas deJesus Lopez Rodriguez blessed the facilities and aircraft that will bear theDominican flag in each flight.
