Santo Domingo.– Following the recent release of the Chinese Government's new Policy Paper on Latin America and the Caribbean by China's Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi in Beijing, the country's ambassador to Barbados, Liu Huanxing, has been pointing to specific benefits to accrue to Caricom and other states of the Greater Caribbean, including Cuba and Dominican Republic.

The Caribbean is in for a big boost in economic aid and trade development with China, consistent with Beijing's new policy to deepen relations with this region and Latin America.

The new "friendship initiatives" by Beijing include expanded bilateral grant aid and loans to governments on preferential terms, as well as increases in multilateral aid packages through the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), as well as widening bilateral trade.

Ni hao ma, Wa hao. (How are you? Fine)
The more aid and loans from mainland China, with soft conditions the better.
Taiwan has always stepped up to the plate with the DR and mainland China does not approve of those relations so it's about time that mainland China's presence is felt and translated into more aid for the ailing economies of the Caribbean including DR and not just an abundance of Chinese made goods.
I just hope that this new aid would not be conditional on severance of our historically good ties
with Taiwan as has been hinted and pressured in the past.
Che Che. (Thank you)

Going once....going twice.... sold to the highest bidder!
Not true GC, Taiwan has been a true friend and ally of the DR since after WWII and has a long history of diplomatic ties with us and a truly long friendship.
No amount of money thrown at the table can change that, and if it does it will be another snafu by
this fiscal predatory government that will be reversed later.

sorry marte3 here are the facts:
In Mandarin, it's xie xie. You would use it when anyone shows hospitality or gives you something. If someone picks up some food and brings it to your plate you would say xie xie.
I wrote che che because of the phonetic spanish pronunciation, in english the sound is more like
xie xie, but the meaning is the same.
GC:
I am worried about josean and my foot is getting too soft from not getting any practice, actually I was fond of the kid and he kind of grew on me like a mold. We miss you josean, resurface please!

genius please explain to us how Taiwan has stepped up to the plate for the Dominican republic. it seems taiwan is all talk and no action....what happended to the elimination of the debt between ROC and DR didnt the president of taiwan during his visit promise to absolve the debt? Where is the much touted high 'tech' free zones? i could go on and on .....furthermore the whole article is bs. The PRC has no interest in loaning or giving any monies to this administration.

genius why don't you enlighten us with your knowledge and educate us for our further self improvement?
you can start by researching the files in the "cancilleria" from 1948 on.
It is always nice to share knowledge with others, where do you get your factual info?
Can you please quote some references for our enlightenment ?
Thank you oh wise one.

I had two good sources for my info on Taiwan one of them was Fabio Herrera who was a lifer at the cancilleria and personally told me all the stories and the other one was the person in charge of protocol (now deceased) who was a permanent fixture as well there, better inside sources than that you can not get.
There is always the possibility of the stories being "colored" a bit but that happens to all of us because of our sometimes faulty recollection.
Gc: sometimes it just amazes me the degree of insolence combined with angry stupidity for not knowing.

Gentlemen sry for not responding sooner...Generoso i was on the same couch as you with Fabio Herrera and with all the due respect to Don Fabio what was said on that couch was pure heresay and rumor..now having lived in the far east for five years (hong Kong, singapore and lots of weekly visits to the PRC) it is my personal belief that the PRC is the powerhouse of the world. so much so that the Taiwanese themselves recognise this fact and are the biggest investors in Mainland China. As far as records go in Cancilleria i dont know what your looking for. The last DR ambassador to china was asked to leave with the nationalissts to Taiwan in 1948/49. this at a time when taiwan was NO democracy and supported itself with opium and heroin drug dealing. up until the 1980 and the fall of communisiim the taiwan - DR relationship worked only to please the status quo balance of power between the USA and Communist bloc countries (remember domincian fear of maoist chinese commies as described by

USA ambassador Martin in his book 'Overtaken By events"?. but what of the Taiwan-DR relationship? Durning Deng Xiao Ping last chairmanship he claimed 'to be rich is glorious' and started china on its path to a more open society...(no its not perfect byany means) and a willingness to embrace the world and its economies. now what has Taiwan done for the DR in its entire bi-lateral relationship? not much....lets start with the debt that was supposed to b absolved? What happened tothe cibernetic free zone? why do u think DR has never been able to aquire the UN security seat so coveted by Leonel? why did Balaguer open quasi relations with the PRC in the early 90's? only to have the Taiwanese freak out and butt into the affairs of a foreign state? The best thing DR can do is thank Taiwan for its 'support' and show them to the door....remember nation states dont have morals only national interests.

goule: in response to your post i believe the Taiwanese only paid off the top honchos of Cancilleria (inlcuding buying their groceries and picking up the tab) for the Dominican Republics continued loyalty towards Taiwan.....check this out....when a new Dominican ambassador or consul arrives to Hong Kong or Singapore he is recieved by not only protocol of that territory but is also recieved by a Taiwanese diplomat. on the surface the taiwanese want to 'ease the path of the newly arrived envoy." but in reality it s to make sure that envoy does nt get to friendly with the PRC natives. This is as real as real gets....
