Port-au-Prince.–
Thousands of Haitians marched last week in Port-au-Prince and other cities to
celebrate the first election of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and
call for his return from exile in South Africa.
"We want our leader to come back to his country. He's the only one who
cares about our situation. It's Aristide we want and not (President Rene
Preval)," chanted a group of youths holding banners over their heads.
The demonstrators,
mostly poor country and city residents, wore T-shirts with portraits of
Aristide, known affectionately as "the little priest," who shunned
the cloth to rise under a populist banner to political power.
Former officials under Aristide's two governments also took part in the street
marches in Cap-Haitien, the country's second-largest city.

Why do they miss him? He was an ineffective leader. Haiti is showing some progress with Preval at least!

Guys, I have been telling you that Aristide is missed by about 80% of the Haitian Population. Aristide is a genius. I put him in the same rank with Martin Luther King, Toussaint Louverture, Ghandi, Mandela. Only every century such a great leader emerges. Only Aristide can bring the Haitian diaspora to Haiti to invest. Preval is just a shadow. Aristide is the real deal. Aristide is due to return to Haiti in a few months (March 2009). VIVA TITID!

Former exec pays fine
A French court has ordered Didier Bidaut and his wife Denise to pay EUR4,500 to a Dominican domestic worker, as well as a EUR1,000 fine each for illegally hiring a foreigner and abusing a domestic worker. Listin Diario reports that Didier Bidaut, former director of Air France in the DR, and his wife, have been sentenced to three and five months in jail for abusing "Angelita," the domestic worker. Listin reports that "Angelita" was tired of the abuse she was suffering at the Bidaut home in the Picardie region of France, and eventually managed to escape. A Spanish-speaking woman helped "Angelita," and took her to a police station where she filed a complaint against the couple.
Reports indicate that the housekeeper was forced to work from 7am to 9pm seven days a week, for EUR300 per month, which is one third of the minimum salary in France. She was also "lent" to friends to do domestic work.

If you think that this would make the DR gov change the way it operates, then you really are clueless about how things are run in Latin America. From Tijuana to Tierra del Fuego, the only law that is obeyed is the one dictated by money and the ones who possess it. You should be aware of this in light of the fact that the country you're currently living in (the US) would be the one that would play a crucial role in making this sad fact a reality, with their help to our governing triads (the landlords, the church and the military), refining the mechanisms of domination left by the european conquerors.

No dictators can exist in this hemisphere without the back up of the U.S. The U.S. supported Papa Doc for as long as he was in power.
The U.S. has ruined most of the region's agricuture as well. The U.S. forces you to depend on their support. This is what is called "Neo-Colonialism"

Brazil? breaking the mold? ha, please GC, don't make me laugh. Haven't you heard about the following tin pot dictators: Castelo Branco · Artur da Costa e Silva · Aurélio de Lira Tavares · Augusto Rademaker · Márcio Melo · Emílio Garrastazu Médici · Ernesto Geisel · João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo, or about the military regime that they led between 1964 and 1985? LMAO, you have really made my day. Believe me, the brazilian military dictatorship had nothing to envy the cruelty of a Trujillo, a Duvalier or any of the other dictators in the continent.
