Havana.– Cuba hopes the presidency of Barack Obama will lead to closer relations with the United States, saying it is ready to open dialogue. "We are willing, as we've always said, to one day normalize relations between the United States and Cuba," Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said on Friday.

During his presidential campaign, President-elect Barack Obama said he would consider easing restrictions on Cuban Americans who want to travel or send money to Cuba.

The Cuban minister responded that such an initiative would be "a positive first step" and suggested that if certain conditions are met the two countries would see better days. "We firmly demand the lifting of the embargo, the ceasing of extraterritorial measures taken to persecute our trade with other countries," the Cuban official said.

Cuba wants the United States to close its Guantanamo Bay prison, rewrite immigration rules for Cuban migrants, and lift the nearly 50-year-old economic sanctions it has imposed on Havana.

Cuba libre may kill tourism in DR??? NO REALLY... Europeans and Canadiens travel freely to Cuban as it is... What would make the difference when they become capitalist... Most of DR tourism market is European, Canadien or Dominicans living in the US....

There may be slow down, an intrigue of knowing about cuba... but that will go away in one or two years.... We'll just have to make things more efficient for the tourist.... and when it comes to tourism, DR is KING... I wish everything in DR would run as effeciently as the Tourism industry

Since fifty years every U.S. Prersident will stand to honored the last and maintain the same attitude in regards to Cuba. One political system is the same as any other abd the only different will be the people that they governed. You think that you are free in the U.S. cause you can course whomever you like and make jokes too. Cause you can moved about wherever you like and buy whatever you want. Funny, you can do this things in Cube too, just watch some Cuban T.V. You can party and celebrate. The embargo has kept Cuba from getting as much junk as you see here in the U.S. although for the Cuban gov. what they most want is to be more competitive with the rest of the world that is slowly turning to them except for the U.S. who hurts more the people of Cuba than the government. If the system is as oppressived as they say than why do so many Cubans who recently come to the U.S. find that the U.S. is the " real Communist ", many cuban had said to me " this is an organized communist country"

if it does slow dominican tourism, then good. That means we would have to focus more on Manufacturing and exporting, and not some rich foreigners coming and palying in our beaches when the citizens can't even afford it. WE COULD TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK

Most of the time people who live through something have a much better understanding of their realities -- when and if they are truely honest with themselves and what they want to related as informations of the true. The medias in the U.S. gives a one sided and often unrealistic and false information about Cuba's formed of government. People that critisize it get their information mainly from sources that only show the negative nature of such a system. Talking to people that have come to the U.S. legally from Cuba and asking them to said the true, they paint a different story from the one the medias present. Tourist that travel to Cuba also leave with a different attititude about it.

As Cuba approaches the 50th anniversary of its revolution this New Year’s Day, the island’s Communist government appears to be taking a harder line against a budding group of Cuban Internet bloggers pushing for greater freedoms.

On Thursday, Cuban blogger Claudia Cadelo, was summoned to appear at the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of domestic security. A day earlier, Yoani Sanchez, the nation’s most prominent blogger, was told by authorities that her activities had “crossed the limits of tolerance,” and was told she couldn’t hold a planned meeting this Saturday of local bloggers,....the end is near for the senile Castros this is the beginning of the end
