Fidel and Raul
Zoom Picture

Havana.– Interim president Raul Castro has officially convened the National Assembly for a February 24 meeting to elect Cuba's next president, amid speculation ailing Fidel Castro might not be its choice for the first time in almost five decades.

Under a decree published in Saturday's official newspapers, Raul Castro, 76, summoned the 614 deputies – including himself and his brother Fidel Castro, 81 – selected in an uncontested January 20 vote, to the late February gathering to choose the Council of State. Its leader is Cuba's president.

Fidel Castro, Cuba's leader since 1959, has not appeared in public since taking ill 18 months ago. Fidel Castro underwent major intestinal surgery and handed over power to Raul Castro, the defense chief, temporarily.

Now what remains to be seen is whether Fidel Castro will agree to be reelected president and perhaps stay on in a ceremonial capacity, keeping Raul Castro on as interim leader.

Or, experts say, Fidel Castro could opt to step aside and allow Raul Castro to become president permanently.

Perhaps a longer shot, some Cuba-watchers say, would be for Fidel to step aside and allow a younger leader to take on the job now, opening the door to extending the Americas' only one-party communist regime well into the future.

On January 20, Raul Castro stressed that Cuba was facing "different situations and great decisions."

Who cares as long as the people are the best fed and educated in the caribbean.

Too bad we will never get to hear how the Cubans feel about this because they have NO CHOICE at all.

As opposed to us who can choose between who can screw us in the left ear, or the right ear or where the sun never shines. On the things that really matter do you really think we have a choice? If so we must have chosen to have this mess created.

yes but we still have some kind of choice....those poor miserable ,people in cuba dont know any better....ignorance is bliss....and still the country would empty out overnight if they were allowed to leave....how do you get four cubans in a styrofoam cup?.......Tell them it floats....everybody wants out...nobody wants in.....please explain that to me comrade

gouletcolonial - We have the same choice that they have when it comes to choosing government officials as I said above. I agree that some want out as some Dominicans want out. The big difference is the spin on the stories given to Cubans in your styrofoam cup and the Dominicans that risk their lives in the Mona Channel. I've been to Cuba many times. With your hyperblic assertions that everybody wants out and nobady wants in, I can only conclude that all you know about Cuba is what you read. A typical tactic for attacking anyone that might have a balanced view on Cuba is to call them "Comrade". People who engage in educated debates do not resort to namecalling their opponents. When they do it only shows the weakness of their arguments. So where are you going to get it? Will it be in your left ear, your right ear or where the sun doesen't shine? Wait a minute it won't be in your left ear because someone might take you for a "Comrade"!!

I have been to cuba. The people are scared to death. The 49 Plymouth and driver I hired wouldn't speak to me till the last day thinking my buddy was Cuban Secret Police. There was also a line up at the restaurants I ate at to get my leftovers in a piece of newspaper.

If you have been there many times you would see that also. To put the DR and Cuba in the same basket politically is just about the most silly statement I have read here.

gouletcolonial, - North Korea???? What does North Korea have to do with the topic other than that they are both labled "Communist". Last year the UN held a vote demanding sanctions be lifted against Cuba. The US and some obscure little island country in the south pacific voted against the resolution. Clearly these countries must know more the the propaganda propogated against Cuba that some of the posters are spewing here. How many foreigners are allowed into North Korea? You can't put Cuba and North Korea in the same sentence within this debate. Please let us keep the discussion intelligent. Escott, "the people are scared to death". In what circle do you travel? I found most of the people friendly. Some were reserved, but scared to death, come on. This whole debate began about the choices we have in electing our leaders. I contend we don't have much choice because the whole thing is rigged. That is why we cannot seem to make headway in developing this country properly.

Hugo maybe nutty, but he's stabilizing the inequality in Venezuela. See, everything has their own pros and cons. Castro educated his people, and gave his country one of the highest literacy rate, and highest level of healthcare in his region. DR has its pros of having a relatively free people, but crime is surging. Cubans don't worry about that much crime, but have some other limits to their freedom. At the end of the day, can't hate on the cubans as much. Say what u want to say, but Im almost certain that cuba is more prepared in modernizing their country than DR. They have an abundance of engineers, architects, doctors, and other professionals in their country. Not to mention the Miami elites that have tons of money to put in their country once Fidel is gone

He just wanted to finish what Simon Bolivar started : INDEPENDENCE, freedom and equality( read fair chances).
Fidel was an idealist, who wanted to elibarate Cuba from American opression, when back in 1959 Batista was just a stupid puppet of the yankey, 85% of Cuban land and economy was in American hands and most locals barely survived on daily basis, being the servants of the US expats (just about the same of what happens right now in the DR ) . Just so you know, Fidel wasn't even a communist, socialist and idealist -yes, which is very different !!!

sorry for pressing the Enter button too many times...
Where was I ... oh , our Canadian friend up here, gouletcolonial could tell us a little more about socialism in their beautiful country and how would he feel if he was mistakenly called a communist ?!
So Fidel , Raul and Dr. Che were not at initially communists (huge missperseption !!!), it was only the Cold War situation and how Chruschev offered them protection, well it seemed like a decent option aligning with the Bolshevics !
Older Cubans whom remember the Batista years, they remember how bad it was (again, just like the DR today, poor locals are struggeling to make ends meet, while expats are raping their children !!!) they think Fidel was sent by God and saved them from evil ! True, the communist example didn't turn out to be perfect , 'though petty good in theory... So Cuba is in a "Special Period" since the collapse of the Soviet block, only because of the embargo of Uncle Sam.

I have great respect for Fidel, he's a true patriot ! He survived 162 miserably failed CIA plots to kill him and the US is the laugh of the world... Cuba is the only nation in the world they didn't know how to handle.
Cubans understand that they're poor, and they do not blame Castro for that...but still there' re no homeless people, no beggars on streets, they are educated, got a great healthcare system and there is no poverty like in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti, DR, El Salvador, Honduras, most of South America, Africa, South Asia so on !!! There's no crime in Cuba, I walked down the streets of Havana hand'n'hand with my wife in the middle of the night and we felt safer than in any North American city during daylight !!!
There are lots of great things about Cuba and if it wasn't for the American embargo, they were way better off than anyone else in central America - keep this in mind my friends !!!

Long term Cuba advantages (When Opened to The World) over DR’s

1- Government with a “Rule of Law“.
2- Developed Health Care System.
3- Developed Education System.
4- Literate Work Force.
5- Virgin Country for “New Investments“.
6- Lack of “Private Sector” Corruption.
7- Favorable Labor Cost.
8- Cero Criminality.
9- Best Hispanic Adaptation on National Level towards Democracy.
10-90 Miles from Continental US.

After all Cuba did took the right path to become eventually into a true "Democracy” at the end.

Note: I know many DR’s Business don’t want this to Happen, that is the reason for the embargo, US little girl !!!

That's a bleeding lie!!!, because that line is omitting the fact that the US is applying the "wet-foot, dry-foot" favoring the Cubans with instant citizenship if they ever set foot on the US (contrary to what they do with haitian and dominican yoleros, which are instantly returned to the island faster than you could say "yola"). Or the writer is a willfull ignorant or fool, or else is confounding the US-Cuban relationship with the current US relations with the DR, which could be reduced precisely to that line.

Curiously, the most anti-Americans countries in Latin America are those who never had a intervention by the USA. However the Dominican Republic, Panama, Nicaragua and Cuba that did, are traditionally less anti-American that Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay. The Cuban people (contrary to what many believe in this forum) are not and have never been anti-American. Quite the contrary. Despite 50 years of Castro today they are less anti-Yankee than ever. The rest is a fabrication.
Marcos Salas
It's a shame that because of the the anti-Americanism in the world, the Castros still have sympathizers and are not seen for what they really are: murderers, tyrants, dinosaurs that have destroyed the economy and the hope of a country that emigrates in droves. This "new" nomenclature (all military) over 77 years of age, will make the changes so that everything remains the same. Why not condemn dictatorships when they are from left? Why, please! Somebody explain that!
