Washington.– People who knew Stephen Kazmierczak described him Friday as quiet, polite, engaging and industrious.
Yet authorities say the 27-year-old walked into a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University Thursday and opened fire on a geology class – killing five students before killing himself.
Police say Kazmierczak had been acting erratically recently after he stopped taking his medication. But those who knew Kazmierczak recalled him as a polite, hard-working and award-winning student.
Kazmierczak graduated from NIU in 2007 and was a graduate student in sociology there before moving on to graduate work at the University of Illinois.
His faculty adviser, U-of-I professor Jan Carter-Black, say she's stunned. Carter-Black says she "saw nothing to suggest that there was anything troubling about his behavior."

Another evil gun found an innocent young guy at the corner of a street and transformed him into a vicious killing machine...
Shall we have a serious talk about mentall illness care and detection now?...
The constitution and the right to bear arms have nothing to do with that (it happen everywhere). it's a a social problem that modern society failed to address... and it's a lot easier to blame inanimated object, politicians or political concept like the US constitution than to try to understand and find a real solution.
With that said, there are many forms of gun control from tougher requirements for licensing, to required locks, to fingerprint usage, to out right banning. Any of these measures will be a step forward.
