Steven Kazmierczak who killed six people at Northern Illinois University on February 14.

Washington.– People who knew Stephen Kazmierczak described him Friday as quiet, polite, engaging and industrious.

Yet authorities say the 27-year-old walked into a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University Thursday and opened fire on a geology class – killing five students before killing himself.

Police say Kazmierczak had been acting erratically recently after he stopped taking his medication. But those who knew Kazmierczak recalled him as a polite, hard-working and award-winning student.

Kazmierczak graduated from NIU in 2007 and was a graduate student in sociology there before moving on to graduate work at the University of Illinois.

His faculty adviser, U-of-I professor Jan Carter-Black, say she's stunned. Carter-Black says she "saw nothing to suggest that there was anything troubling about his behavior."

Shall we have a serious talk about gun control now? the "right to Bear Arms" is something that is captured in the constitution, but that doesn;t mean we can't change it! Remember, there were all sorts of antiquated measures that have been changed in the constitution... In short, the constitution should be seen as a living document that evolves with time-- that's what Jefforson and many of the other founders wanted. A revisiting of the constitution every 50 years, but they were defeated by more conservative forces. Time to send those conservative forces packing.. for all our sakes.

Yes yes baldoria23 yes... as always, it's the gun fault...

Another evil gun found an innocent young guy at the corner of a street and transformed him into a vicious killing machine...
Shall we have a serious talk about mentall illness care and detection now?...

The constitution and the right to bear arms have nothing to do with that (it happen everywhere). it's a a social problem that modern society failed to address... and it's a lot easier to blame inanimated object, politicians or political concept like the US constitution than to try to understand and find a real solution.

hold on there baldy...these conservative forces are the only thing between chaos and order....what you recommend is the inmates taking over the asylum.....not so fast.....this is all part of that blame the victim scam......If all the whiners and complainers accepted responsibility for their selfish attitudes we could advance....baldy remember you also were considered polite and industrious before you went off the deep end and joined the lunatic fringe

GC - do me a favor, and refrain from ever commenting on any of my post. I feel your points are abrassive, sophmoric, and thuggish. But like I've told you before, I don't let myself be pushed around. Sir/Madam, with this I sincerely hope never to hear from you again, at least not directly. Oh what a happy day that would be...

With that said, there are many forms of gun control from tougher requirements for licensing, to required locks, to fingerprint usage, to out right banning. Any of these measures will be a step forward.

GC - when you want to rejoin our respectful dialogue, feel free to do so in a respectful way. If not, till NEVER, I hope.

This shows the power of controling the political agenda.
